ams automotive sensing and lighting innovations

Help achieve a safer, smarter and more environmentally friendly driving experience.

Autonomous driving, electrification, connected cars and new mobility concepts… all of these will further reshape the value proposition for car manufacturers. For sensor technology companies like ams, this means technologies related to enhanced safety, advanced driver assistance and lighting design.

These new technologies, which either make cars more personalized and popular in the market or help save the lives of drivers and passengers, have been mandated by many governments. For example, organizations such as the European New Car Assessment Program and the European Commission have been working closely with automakers to create standard equipment for future cars. In 2019, the European Commission passed several regulations requiring new cars to make a leap in safety measures and implement them by 2022. These measures are called general safety regulations, and according to an article on the European Commission and European Automotive News, automakers need to implement these new measures as standard in new cars.

These include driver monitoring technology, which alerts and warns drivers when they are distracted, drowsy or using their smartphones; hands-on detection technology, which checks if the driver's hands are on the steering wheel; and lane change/keep assist technology, which controls vehicle speed through intelligent communication with road signs and GPS data, etc. This year, car models are required to use driver monitoring systems to pass NCAP safety ratings.

How can ams sensor technology help automakers comply with these changing regulations while also increasing comfort and personalization in vehicles?

Virtual Demo Tour (Chinese subtitles)

To help you learn more, Jim Archibald, Field Application Engineer at ams, will take you on a virtual tour. He will describe:

  • Manual driving detection

That is, the steering wheel hands-off detection HOD, in which an automotive-grade capacitive sensor from ams is installed.

  • Driver Monitoring Technology

VCSEL flood illuminator and NIR sensor are used in the camera system.

  • True solid-state automotive LiDAR

This is made possible by ams’ VCSEL technology and the system expertise of its partner Ibeo.

  • Projection lighting

The ams Micro Lens Array (MLA) was utilized.
