Software radio is an architecture for wireless communication proposed in the 1990s. It is considered to be the third generation of radio communication technology after analog communication and digital communication. Its central idea is to construct an open, standardized, modular universal hardware platform and make the broadband analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters as close to the antenna as possible, so that various functions such as working frequency band, modulation and demodulation type, data format, encryption mode, communication protocol, etc. can be completed by software. This paper first introduces the basic principles and three structural forms of software radio, and summarizes several key technologies of software radio and its latest research progress. Among them, the modulation and demodulation module is an important part of the software radio system, which embodies the most significant advantage of software radio - flexibility. At present, there are various technical implementation methods for this part. With the rapid development of chip manufacturing technology in recent years, programmable devices FPGA have become an important means to realize software radio technology with its high-speed processing performance, high capacity and flexible reconfiguration capabilities. The design of the modulation and demodulation system in this paper selects two representative methods, 16QAM and QPSK, as the research objects, and uses SystemView software as a system-level development tool for integrated design. After realizing system simulation and overall FPGA planning, the paper focuses on analyzing how to use VHDL to realize key modules and how to use the CPU core embedded in FPGA to control the conversion of modulation and demodulation modes. At the same time, the IP core of Xilinx was successfully called in the design to realize design reuse. Since the internal logic of FPGA can be reconstructed as needed, the debugging and upgrading of hardware becomes very easy, and the embedded CPU enables the signal processing process to be controlled by software, which fully reflects the flexibility of software radio. Through the research of this paper, the technical feasibility and application flexibility of realizing digital modulation and demodulation process and control in FPGA are preliminarily verified, and the future expansion issues are studied and discussed, laying the foundation for realizing a complete software radio system.
