The economic advantages of voice-data integration combined with advances in voice/packet technology have ushered in a new network environment that offers low cost, high flexibility, and productivity-enhancing applications. Recent advances and developments in hardware, software, and network protocol design have further driven the development of this new integrated infrastructure. These technologies have created a new set of network products, but they have also created new management and operational issues. This chapter discusses these issues and explains how they affect the VoIP network environment.
