03Token Ring and Source Routing Bridging Download Chapter 3 Token Ring and Source Routing Bridging Although the medium of most networks is one of the three available forms of Ethernet, Token Ring still has a place today. However, its unusual transmission method and unconventional MAC address representation often make many engineers feel troubled. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) once adopted the original Token Ring specification and only slightly modified it. The modified specification is called IEEE 802.5 and it was published in 1985. It was mainly used in environments where IBM was a major supplier, which made Token Ring popular all over the world. In the 1980s, IBM was quite popular in the computer industry and many customers used this special medium. Until now, financial associations, insurance companies, organizations and governments are still the main customers of Token Ring networks. Although many customers are replacing Token Ring networks with other media, some customers have been forced to give up due to the maturity of Token Ring and the inconvenience of transitioning to Ethernet. 3.1 Token Ring Structure In the mid-1970s, as LANs became more and more popular, IBM felt the need to develop its own LAN medium. At that time, Ethernet was not suitable for IBM\'s actual situation. In the 1960s and 1970s, IBM was a very strict organization, and its male employees had to wear white shirts and blue pants, not off-white or light red. Of course, such a strict company would not approve of a medium that allows workstations to transmit at any time, regardless of whether other workstations are transmitting. I don\'t know the true story of IBM\'s development of token ring, but it did help me understand the structure of token ring. Token ring does not place workstations on wires or network segments, but sets up workstations in a ring. Usually, a hub called MAU (multiaccess unit) is used to create a token ring. Figure 3-1 shows an example of connecting workstations to MAUs to create a token ring. The network in the figure is a ring from a logical point of view, but from a physical point of view, it looks like a star...
