The FlexRay communication system is used to provide high-speed deterministic distributed control for advanced automotive applications. It uses a dual-channel architecture to provide system-level redundancy that meets the reliability requirements of safety-related systems such as wire-controlled brake and wire-controlled steering systems. With a data transmission rate of 10 Mbit/s per channel, the FlexRay system can also be used as an automotive wide area network backbone to work in conjunction with other communication systems such as CAN and LIN. It can reduce the number of parallel CAN networks used to solve bandwidth bottlenecks, thereby reducing costs.
