Hot discussion on the new regulation proposed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology [Rated transmission power requirement: less than 50W] [Copy link]

This post was last edited by qwqwqw2088 on 2021-7-8 10:07

The ins and outs of the problem: On February 19, 2021, the Radio Management Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology drafted new specifications for wireless charging (power transmission) equipment, involving many first-tier domestic and foreign mobile phone brands, mobile phone accessories suppliers, chip companies, etc. If the new regulations are implemented, it will inevitably affect the existing and future product layout of various manufacturers.

Annex 1 to the Interim Provisions on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment (Draft for Comments)

1. What is the background of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposing wireless charging standards?

On February 19, 2021, in order to regulate the orderly use of radio spectrum resources by wireless charging (power transmission) equipment, avoid harmful interference to various radio services carried out in accordance with the law, and maintain the order of airwaves, the Radio Management Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized the drafting of the Interim Provisions on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment (Draft for Comments) and solicited public opinions. Among them, the requirements for mobile and portable wireless charging equipment are described as "rated transmission power requirements: less than 50W". As soon as the opinion came out, it caused a lot of fluctuations in the charging industry. In order to regulate the orderly use of radio spectrum resources by wireless charging (power transmission) equipment, avoid harmful interference to various radio services carried out in accordance with the law, and maintain the order of airwaves, the Radio Management Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized the drafting of the Interim Provisions on Radio Management of Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment (Draft for Comments) and solicited public opinions. Among them, the requirements for mobile and portable wireless charging equipment are described as "rated transmission power requirements: less than 50W". As soon as the opinion came out, it caused a lot of fluctuations in the charging industry.

2. What changes will occur in the future development of wireless charging technology? Will there be bottlenecks?

Article 4 of the draft for comments clearly states that the rated power of mobile and portable wireless charging devices shall not exceed 50W, and the radiation parameters must meet the "Technical Requirements for Wireless Charging (Power Transmission) Equipment".

This means that the ceiling of mobile phone wireless charging power has been limited to a maximum of 50W.

In the future, wireless charging will not only not encounter bottlenecks, but will develop more soundly under this specification. Chip manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers will focus on developing better products to bring users a true wireless fast charging experience, achieve shorter wireless charging time and higher cost-effective products.

3. How will mobile phone charging’s attitude towards wireless charging technology change?

Will the demand for wireless charging for mobile phones continue to exist?

Several issues that will be addressed in the future are:

1. The experience of wireless charging time. Currently, high-power charging can only last for a short time. If fast charging can be achieved within 50W, the charging time will be greatly reduced.
2. The experience of wireless charging freedom.

In fact, there are two difficulties that the wireless charging industry needs to overcome: charging speed and spatial freedom during charging. For consumers, this is directly related to the sense of freedom during the charging experience. Needless to say, the charging speed, such as the well-known OPPO fast charging technology, is to charge the device as much as possible in a unit of time. In terms of spatial freedom, wireless charging technology is generally evaluated from a three-dimensional perspective, namely the vertical distance during charging and the horizontal range that can be covered.

At present, wireless charging requires center alignment to achieve maximum energy efficiency. If it can be charged at any time and while playing without alignment within 50W, it will greatly improve the freedom of charging. Apple MagSafe is a good application.
3. The cost-effective experience of wireless charging. At present, the high power of wireless charging has a relatively high bom cost, which affects the sinking of wireless charging to mid- and low-end models. If the BoM price of wireless charging can be made lower within 50W, the wireless charging market will usher in another explosion.

4. If the power of wireless fast charging is capped, what impact will it have on the wireless charging technology roadmap?

Currently, this regulation is still in the stage of soliciting opinions, but the actual content should be similar to the current draft for soliciting opinions.

Whether the power is below 50W or above 50W, within the regulatory power range, the charging time is shorter, the system cost is lower, and it is also compatible with magnetic suction applications. Under this assumption, even if wireless charging applications are 50W or below, innovative technologies are still needed to promote their further development.

Generally, it is a challenge for companies with mature technology in the charging field to ensure that the equipment can be charged at high power continuously while ensuring the stability of its performance.

Since the country has formulated the 50W power standard, it should be based on the premise of numerous tests. In other words, the country believes that wireless charging with a rated power exceeding 50W will have certain safety risks. This standard is indeed for consumers.

It should be noted that this standard applies not only to domestic products, but also to imported products, and is not targeted at any specific company or product.

The battery capacity of mobile devices is limited by volume and weight, and the upper limit of charging speed is determined by the material and structure of the battery. The closer to the limit, the worse the safety and energy conversion efficiency will decrease accordingly. Blindly pursuing charging speed not only poses a safety hazard, but is also detrimental to the environment, especially wireless charging, which also has an electromagnetic radiation problem. Extensive use of high-power wireless charging will increase environmental background electromagnetic noise, which will have a significant negative impact on micro-power wireless communications, leading to a vicious cycle, so it should definitely be restricted.

I think 50W is enough. It is very good to be able to reach such a high power in the air. Any higher will indeed cause harm to the human body. This limit is very good!

In fact, this draft regulation also explains the limits on magnetic field intensity emissions, including maintaining airwaves

After all, there is also the consideration of not producing radiation to the human body.
