Composition of metropolitan area network communication line system 5. Schematic diagram of station communication system II. Introduction to optical fiber communication 1. Brief history of optical fiber communication Optical fiber communication is a communication method that uses laser as information carrier and optical fiber as transmission medium. Optical fiber communication technology is a high-tech technology that has developed rapidly in the past 30 years; its birth and development have brought an epoch-making revolution to the world\'s communication technology. In 1966, Chinese American Charles Kao and his collaborators proposed the concept of optical fiber communication. In 1970, CORNING Company in the United States first developed step-index multimode optical fiber, with an attenuation coefficient of less than 20dB/km at a wavelength of 630nm. In the same year, Bell Laboratories developed a laser that works continuously at room temperature. In 1972, with the improvement of optical fiber preparation technology, the attenuation coefficient of gradient refractive index multimode optical fiber was reduced to 4dB/km. In 1976, it was discovered that the attenuation of optical fiber has two windows in the two long wavelength regions: 1310nm and 1550nm. Westinghouse Electric Company of the United States conducted the world\'s first field test of a fiber-optic communication system with a transmission of 44.736Mbit/s and 110km in Atlanta. 2. The fiber-optic communication system consists of three parts: transmitting equipment, optical fiber cable, and receiving equipment. 3. Characteristics of fiber-optic communication (1) Advantages: Extremely wide transmission band and large communication capacity Low transmission attenuation and long distance Low signal crosstalk and good confidentiality Anti-electromagnetic interference and high transmission quality Small optical fiber size and light weight, easy to transport and lay Resistant to chemical corrosion, suitable for special environments Raw material resources are abundant and non-ferrous metals are saved (2) Disadvantages: The bending radius of the optical fiber should not be too small The cutting and connecting operations of the optical fiber require high technical requirements Branching and coupling operations are cumbersome III. Optical fiber, optical cable and devices IV. Fundamentals of optical cable line engineering design
