The switch combination state and shortcomings of the matrix converter-permanent magnet synchronous motor (MC-PMSM) system based on current hysteresis control are analyzed: there are large 5th and 7th harmonic components in the system side current. An improved current control method is proposed. This method adopts motor current dual-loop control to obtain 6 current control signals of the three-phase motor current, and divides the input three-phase voltage into 12 phase areas. According to the current control signal and the phase area number, different input phases are selected to connect with the output phase to determine the switch combination state of the matrix converter. Under this method, each input phase participates in the modulation throughout the cycle, which reduces the harmonic components of the system input current and improves the sinusoidality of the system input current. Abstract: This paper presented an improved current hysteresis-loop modulation approach for the vector control of matrix converter- permanent magnet synchronous motor (MC-PMSM) system. With the approach, the three-phase input voltages were divided into 12 sections and 3 pairs of current control signals were deduced by comparing the reference values and the measured values of the output currents based on double current loops. Then, the states of the switches in the MC-PMSM system were determined according to the section number of the input voltages and one of the 3 pairs of current control signals, so that the modulation of every input voltage phase held in the whole periods. Hence the 5th harmonic, the 7th harmonic, and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input currents, which were relatively large when the based current hysteresis-loop modulation method was adopted in the system, are obviously reduced and the input currents of the system become more sinusoidal.
