NS two high performance converters [Copy link]

National Semiconductor has announced two new high-performance converters that improve efficiency and extend battery life in high-current systems. The LM2716 buck/boost converter and LM2717 buck/buck converter can drive a wide range of loads with efficiencies of more than 90 percent, thereby extending system battery life. The converters are ideal for embedded computer systems, set-top boxes, portable Internet access devices, general loads, and monitors and televisions including TFT/LCD flat panel displays. The converters

are ideal for systems that require high-current, low-voltage power supplies to power their loads, such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), digital signal processors, and digital application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The LM2716 and LM2717 single-chip converters offer both fixed and adjustable output voltages, providing greater system design flexibility. Both converters feature an external soft-start function that limits the input inrush current generated during startup. In addition, both converters feature independent shutdown functions, allowing the user to shut down each regulator separately.

Key Technical Specifications of National Semiconductor's LM2716 Buck/Boost Converter and LM2717 Buck/Buck Converter

The LM2716 chip contains two pulse width modulation (PWM) DC/DC converters, one of which is a buck converter designed to provide a fixed output voltage, and the other is a boost converter designed to provide an adjustable output voltage. The LM2717 chip contains two PWM DC/DC buck converters.

Both converter chips have internal switches with an on-state resistance (RDSon) as low as 0.16W and 0.12W to ensure the highest conversion efficiency, and the operating frequency can be adjusted between 300kHz and 600kHz, allowing the system to use smaller external components. Both LM2716 and LM2717 chips use a small 24-pin TSSOP package.

Both the LM2716 and LM2717 are available in 1,000-unit quantities at $2.40 for the LM2716 and $2.45 for the LM2717. Both are available in lead-free packages and are available from stock in large quantities.
