Next generation cellular base station transmitter designs present significant challenges to RF designers. These wireless systems require the transmission of clean signals with low noise, intermodulation, and harmonic distortion. The design of these systems is made even more challenging by the requirement for higher order modulation while transmitting multi-carrier signals. Designing these systems places high demands on mixer linearity performance. In the past, passive diode ring mixers have been the preferred solution to meet these requirements. Today, a new generation of active mixers offers significant advantages in terms of cost, power, and space savings while solving some of the technical challenges associated with high performance transmitter designs.
