This article has been in my mind for a long time. I wanted to write it before the New Year. It may be a series or just this one. I also want to take this opportunity to meet my peers in the forum.
Three years after the pandemic, the automotive industry, as one of the few industries in China that has maintained growth, has promoted economic development and social stability (haha, these words are a bit exaggerated)
If I had to choose the star OEM company in the past three years, I would choose BYD Tesla.
BYD made a bold move and announced the discontinuation of fuel-powered vehicles in 2102. After that, everyone saw the sales volume. I like to describe it as skyrocketing. I admire the courage of the leader. Although many car companies have announced plans to discontinue fuel-powered vehicles, BYD is the only one that has implemented the deadline so thoroughly and quickly.
At the end of last year, BYD surpassed the 300,000 monthly sales mark and successfully entered the top ten in the global auto market in 2023. Congratulations. Suddenly I remembered what Mr. Li said: I want Chinese cars to run around the world, not global cars to run around China.
When seeing these results, how many people remember that this company has had mediocre sales for ten consecutive years and has not made any progress. The 2018 advertising scandal, the 2019 security guard rights protection incident, the fake official seal incident, and the 2023 atmospheric pressure tank incident
Of course, the more you buy, the more you burn.
At present, Chinese automakers are facing increasingly severe challenges, including the EU's investigation into China's new energy vehicle subsidies, the trade war, Mercedes-Benz's abandonment of its electric vehicle plan, and Apple's abandonment of car manufacturing. To survive, go global.
Let’s talk about Tesla, which was once a luxury car, but now can be seen everywhere on the street.
Tesla's Shanghai factory started construction in 2020, was completed at the end of that year, and then began production. I have experienced Tesla and was amazed by its lack of instruments, simple interior, and assisted driving (I have not experienced this in person, but heard from friends). A car should be a car, not a color TV, sofa, or refrigerator. It is not perfect either. It did not have some functions that are standard in gasoline cars, such as seat ventilation and heating, and ambient lighting. I have nothing to say about this company. Its sales are obvious to all, even though many people outside say it has a "Brake failure." It is a catfish that has promoted the progress of the domestic/world new energy industry and contributed to green travel/sustainable development.
18 years ago, there was a saying in the industry: "There are only two electric car brands in the world, one is Tesla, and the other is other brands", haha
I checked the sales of the two companies in the past four years online for reference only.
I personally thought BYD's pure electric sales could surpass Tesla in 2023, but it still didn't. Perhaps 2023 is the best chance for BYD to surpass Telsa in pure electric sales
