UL 9540:2023 Energy Storage Systems and Equipment Safety Standard Third Edition Released

Recently, the third edition of the Canada-US joint national standard ANSI/CAN/UL 9540:2023 Energy Storage System and Equipment Safety Standard was officially released.
This standard adds the concepts of AC energy storage systems and DC energy storage systems to better match the different applications of energy storage systems.
In terms of energy storage safety, this version of the standard also revised the capacity limit of the energy storage system, which can increase the capacity limit based on the results of the UL 9540A large-scale fire test, but at the same time added explosion-proof and explosion-proof protection requirements to be consistent with the requirements of relevant specifications such as NFPA 855.
In addition, the document adds structural and testing requirements for thermal energy storage systems to better assess the unique hazards associated with these systems. For lithium-ion battery energy storage systems with an energy of 500kWh or more, the document also adds requirements for external warning communication systems .
For liquid-cooled energy storage systems, the document requires that leak detection should be equipped to prevent potentially hazardous situations.
For non-lithium battery energy storage technologies, the revised standard document also revised Appendix D to be consistent with the alternative evaluation methods for valve-regulated or vented lead-acid or nickel-cadmium batteries in the new version of the UL 1973 Appendix.
At the same time, some structural and testing requirements for flywheel energy storage systems have been revised to better assess the hazards of flywheel energy storage system technology.
In addition, the document also added new noise level requirements, requiring that the noise of the energy storage system during operation should be limited to below 85 dBA.
