Operational amplifiers are widely used in sensing and measurement applications. MSP430 microcontrollers (MCUs) provide a full signal chain implementation by integrating the Smart Analog Combo (SAC) to replace external operational amplifiers. The Smart Analog Combo is a configurable analog peripheral that includes a high-performance, low-power operational amplifier, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with a gain of up to 33, and a 12-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This application report explains how to use the Smart Analog Combo module in the MSP430 MCU. The concepts, operating modes, internal connections, ROM-based driver library, and design considerations of the Smart Analog Combo are explained. This application report also gives a use case for the Smart Analog Combo and explains the advantages of using this module in smoke detector and current loop applications.
