10.5GHz (X Band) Patch Antenna

Overview

This is an 8-element patch antenna for phased array systems. Complete build and educational information can be found below in the Design Resource Pack Phased Array Beamformer is pretty cool! They have applications in 5G MIMO, FMCW radar and satellite communications. But their rationale can be difficult to figure out. Using this antenna and the instructions in the link above, you can build an easy-to-use system that allows you to experience the basic mathematics and principles of beamformers. With this setup, you can track an RF source, plot its beam characteristics, and understand the capabilities integrated into modern beamformer ICs. This is a hands-on approach to understanding steering angle, beamwidth, null location, beam taper, grating lobes, beam squint, and single pulse tracking.
