Texas Instruments (TI) has announced a new 1A bqTINY single-cell Li-ion battery linear charger with enhanced thermal fold-back regulation and low-dropout power management. The new 3x3 mm device will make charging safer and more efficient for a variety of applications that charge via a battery charging base or AC adapter, including personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, digital cameras, and wireless headsets. The bq24060 battery charger integrates a 1A power FET and a current sensor, allowing it to withstand input voltages up to 26V. It also provides comprehensive charge management features with unique safety and low voltage drop features to extend battery life. The bq24060 can charge in three stages according to the battery manufacturer's requirements: pre-charge regulation, constant current or thermally regulated current, and precise constant voltage. The charger algorithm shortens the charging time, maximizes the total charge, and protects the battery from overheating or electrical damage. When the battery voltage drops below the internal threshold, the bq24060 will restart charging, and if the external input power is removed, it will enter a low-power sleep mode. The high-performance linear charger integrates reverse blocking protection to prevent battery drain in the absence of DC power. In addition, the bq24060 can be configured to operate in LDO mode, so that the system is fully functional even without a battery. The LDO mode feature is also very useful for board testing before full system testing during end-equipment manufacturing. High input overvoltage and thermal protection The bq24060 also provides an overvoltage protection feature. In the case of high voltage, the device can quickly disconnect the charger and system from the adapter to achieve protection. In addition, the enhanced thermal overload protection voltage regulation feature ensures that the bq24060 can work normally for a long time even in harsh environments with high ambient temperatures, such as working in a car in summer or mistakenly connected to an adapter with a higher input voltage. Key technical features of the bq24060: * Thermal regulation feature maximizes charging rate * Operates in LDO mode when timer pin is floating * Overvoltage protection to set the maximum input voltage to 26V * Integrated power FET and current sensor to meet the needs of maximum 1A charging applications * Reverse leakage protection can avoid battery leakage * Voltage regulation accuracy within +/- 0.5% * Charging terminates at minimum current * Pre-charge regulation with safety timer function * Status outputs for LED or system interface indicate charging and fault conditions, with power good indication option * Short circuit and thermal protection
