Author: Yu Mengmeng, China Securities Journal

On April 24, a discussion about an interviewer at Bilibili (Bilibili for short) belittling the campus recruits of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications caused heated discussion. The post pointed out that during the campus recruitment process of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, the interviewer at Bilibili said that his team was composed of students from Tsinghua University, Peking University or the top three in the QS World University Rankings, "You don't know anything, how can you have the nerve to come?" "Beiyou people are too impetuous. Although the salary at Bilibili is average, it can make you feel fulfilled at work." In response, an account certified by Zhihu as the head of the B-station game studio responded that the above statement was untrue. He said that the company's human resources staff (HR) called the student back at two in the morning, mainly to calm the latter's emotions, and the call was recorded.

The post immediately went viral and quickly became a hot search on Zhihu. As of press time, more than 8,000 users have followed the topic, with over 6 million views. Interestingly, Xu Yi, the founder of B Station, attended Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and netizens also used this information to tease B Station.

The person involved in B station responded twice

The online post listed six controversial remarks about the interviewer at Bilibili, including that Beihang University students have low vision, the interviewer showed off his wealth, belittled Beihang University, and blocked the interviewee.

Facing public opinion, Bilibili responded. "Little Pea", who is certified as the head of Bilibili's game studio, posted a response, completely denying the claims in the online post. "Little Pea" said that no one in the company had blocked the student. After the interview, the HR team flew back to Shanghai and did not receive a call from the student on the plane. The company also did not express any requests or hints about deleting the post. "Because the student did not pass the interview and some offensive remarks appeared on the online platform, HR called the student back at two in the morning, mainly to calm him down. We recorded the call, and the recording can be notarized."

On the evening of April 24, "Little Pea" updated its response, explaining the background of the interview. "During this job fair, due to the large number of people participating in the interview, the time was greatly extended. When it was the student's turn, it was delayed for more than an hour. As a result, when the interview started, the student was in a bad mood and expressed dissatisfaction to us." "Little Pea" said that the team apologized on the spot.

Regarding the statement that "Beiyou people have too narrow vision and are limited to one circle", "Little Pea" claimed that this statement was made by Beiyou students, and denied that "Beiyou people are too impetuous, too narrow-minded, and only focus on high-paying Internet companies". He said that the student made the statement that "big companies all gave me offers, but small companies didn't", and the response of people from Bilibili at that time was that compared with those so-called big companies, Bilibili also has its own advantages, such as development prospects, work content and atmosphere.

It is worth noting that the post mentioned that the HR of Bilibili said that "the team consists of students from Tsinghua University, Peking University or QS top three", while some netizens cited that the alma mater of Bilibili founder Xu Yi is Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. "Little Pea" argued that the team was not composed of the above, and the original words were that some such students were interviewed recently.

Students of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and some netizens disagreed with the response from Bilibili. A reporter from China Securities Journal noticed that in the comments to the post, a student who was certified as a student of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications posted a chat record, pointing out that more than one student had similar experiences during the interview.

  Gaming business is lackluster

At present, there is no clear evidence as to whether the interviewer at Bilibili made inappropriate remarks, but the campus recruitment of the gaming business involved in the incident is undoubtedly a source of anxiety for Bilibili.

Bilibili campus recruitment page

According to the B-station campus recruitment page, there are 63 positions in Beijing and Shanghai, 28 of which involve games, and all game development positions are assigned to Beijing Yuanlixingju, a subsidiary located in Beijing. According to data, in August 2019, Beijing Yuanlixingju became the Beijing R&D center of B-station. The company's main members are all from large domestic game companies. They have presided over the production of many well-known mobile games and have made achievements in many fields such as role-playing, action, cards, chess and cards.

The gaming business has a special meaning for Bilibili. Bilibili was founded on June 26, 2009. The company initially focused on the two-dimensional video community, but its revenue mainly relied on the agency of FGO and Azur Lane. In 2017, the revenue from the gaming business accounted for 83.38% of Bilibili's revenue. On March 28, 2018, Bilibili was listed on the Nasdaq in the United States. On March 29 of this year, Bilibili completed its secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. At this time, the proportion of gaming business revenue has dropped to 40%.

Faced with the decline in the proportion of game revenue, the company explained that it was due to a more complete business structure, but there are still market opinions questioning that its game business has not made much progress for a long time. Internet industry analyst Pei Pei wrote that Bilibili's current game business is almost entirely dependent on agency games such as FGO, Azur Lane, and Princess Connect, and it has not yet obtained a hit new product. "Bilibili wants to do self-research and has also deployed a lot of manpower to do self-research, but it can't do it. Bilibili's game joint operation may have a future, and game distribution may have a little future, but self-developed games have no future, at least not in the next 3-5 years."

Bilibili obviously does not want to give up gaming, the business with the strongest monetization capability, and is trying to continue to expand its gaming business through investment and other means. On April 1, the company announced a strategic investment of approximately HK$960 million in X.D., and will hold approximately 4.72% of its equity. In the future, the two parties will carry out a series of in-depth cooperation around X.D.'s games and TapTap (a mobile game sharing community).

In addition, on April 8, according to media reports, Bilibili is in talks to acquire a 24% stake in Youzu Interactive. In addition to purchasing shares, Bilibili also intends to acquire Youzu's headquarters building in Shanghai and assume nearly 700 million yuan in debt, which is part of a transaction worth nearly 5 billion yuan. In response to this rumor, Bilibili told China Securities Journal that the news was untrue.

Some things are hard to tell whether they are true or false. But I think everyone will subconsciously lean towards the direction that is beneficial to themselves when explaining their own opinions. For example, they will slightly modify their own speech at that time. The feeling given by people in different contexts and moods is very different.

There is one point in it, the interviewer mentions students from Peking University and Tsinghua University, I think it is very common to encounter this situation during the interview. It is to take out some better schools of the same period as examples to compare with you, and let you talk about it yourself, compared with these students who are obviously more famous and have better academic qualifications, what are your characteristics that attract me. I think it is a normal statement.
