[Scientific Epidemic Prevention] How does the infrared body temperature rapid screening device build the first line of defense? [Copy link]

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, many private enterprises have devoted themselves to the fight against the epidemic. As a leading company in infrared temperature measurement equipment in China, Guide Infrared has worked together, key employees have not taken a break during the Spring Festival holiday, and production employees have worked overtime on a 24-hour shift system to produce infrared rapid temperature screening devices.

When the epidemic first broke out, Guide Infrared had already installed infrared rapid temperature screening devices at Wuhan Tianhe Airport, Wuhan's three major railway stations, key hospitals and government agencies, building the first line of defense for epidemic prevention and control. So far, thousands of infrared rapid temperature screening devices produced by the company have been installed in hospitals, railway stations, airports and other crowded public places across the country, including Beijing, Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Yunnan, Anhui, etc.

"Can this infrared rapid temperature screening device really detect people with abnormal body temperature?", "What is the difference between it and a temperature gun?", "Can it measure multiple people at the same time?", "Will this type of detection produce radiation, and is it harmful to the body?" Many people who don't know much about infrared temperature measurement technology have similar confusions and concerns.

To this end, the reporter specially invited Zhang Congrong, Director of Application Technology of Civilian Products of Guide Infrared, to popularize what "infrared thermal imaging temperature measurement" is from a professional and authoritative perspective, and why infrared temperature measurement can "build the first line of defense" in the face of sudden epidemics such as the new coronavirus.

(The following is a transcript of the conversation. The reporter is referred to as "Reporter" and Zhang Congrong is referred to as "Zhang")

Reporter: Mr. Zhang, could you first introduce to us the basic principles of infrared temperature measurement?

Zhang: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet are the visible light in nature that we are all familiar with. In addition to visible light, there is a kind of "light" that is invisible to humans, called "infrared light". As long as the object is above absolute zero (-273.16℃), it will radiate infrared light. Therefore, everything in nature is radiating this invisible infrared light all the time, and humans are no exception. The physical properties of infrared light itself have a strong thermal effect. For example, the heat of the sun is mainly transmitted to the earth through infrared light. Therefore, the infrared light emitted by the object can be converted into the temperature information of the surface of the object through the advanced photoelectric conversion effect of the infrared detector, and then through scientific algorithms and precise program processing. This is the basic principle of infrared temperature measurement.

Reporter: Will this testing method cause harm to the body?

Zhang: Our infrared temperature measurement products passively detect infrared rays, rather than emitting electromagnetic waves, so there is no so-called "radiation". Its principle is actually very similar to that of a camera. A camera will not cause harm to the human body, and neither will our "infrared camera". Therefore, if you encounter infrared temperature measurement products in various security inspection places, you can rest assured to accept the inspection.

Reporter: So what is thermal imaging?

Zhang: The scientific name for this infrared temperature measurement technology is infrared thermal imaging technology. Thermal imaging refers to the process in which infrared radiation emitted by different parts of an object's surface is detected by an infrared detector, and then different temperatures are given different colors after photoelectric conversion and signal processing. Finally, a black-and-white or color image representing the temperature distribution of the object's surface is displayed on the screen, which is a thermal image.

In this thermal image, yellow represents high temperature and purple represents low temperature.

Reporter: The pneumonia epidemic is coming with great force. There is no need to explain how wide-ranging its impact is and how serious the harm is. In this nationwide mobilization to prevent the epidemic, why can the infrared body temperature rapid screening device build the "first line of defense"?

Zhang: The three features of "non-contact temperature measurement", "real-time temperature measurement of large-scale crowds", and "automatic capture of people with fever" are the main reasons why the infrared rapid temperature screening device can build the first line of defense in the prevention and control of the new pneumonia.

The first is "contactless temperature measurement". As an infectious disease, the biggest difficulty in preventing and treating COVID-19 is its high infectiousness during close contact. Traditional temperature measurement tools such as mercury thermometers, forehead temperature guns, and spot thermometers all require direct or close contact with the person being measured, which brings a great risk of infection. The infrared body temperature rapid screening device can solve this problem very well. Not only does it not require direct contact with the person being measured, but it can also keep the test results unaffected while maintaining a considerable detection distance. Taking Guide Infrared's latest XT236 as an example, its maximum temperature measurement distance reaches 10 meters, which greatly reduces the risk of contact for testers at work.

Secondly, after solving the difficulty of contact temperature measurement, it is also necessary to ensure the timeliness of temperature measurement. Imagine if in places with a large flow of people such as airports, railway stations, and subway stations, it takes three to five minutes for each passenger to get the temperature result from the beginning of the test, just like a mercury thermometer, then the result will inevitably lead to crowding, and the risk of infection between each other will increase instead of decrease. Even the temperature gun takes 3-5 seconds, and you must queue up for one-on-one monitoring. The infrared body temperature rapid screening device detects human infrared radiation in real time, and the body temperature data obtained through the algorithm is in milliseconds. When the system is working, there is no need for the crowd to stop at all. Once a person enters the monitoring range of the equipment, the body temperature data can be measured immediately. All this can be done silently, and the person being measured does not feel anything at all.

Finally, I would like to emphasize the importance of "automatically capturing people with fever". Since the flow of people at airports and railway stations is very dense, if only the temperature of everyone is measured, the workload of the staff screening is still very large, and they may even need to stare at the computer screen all day long, otherwise people with fever may be missed at any time, causing greater problems. In view of such application scenarios, we have specially designed the "automatic alarm capture" function. The system can set an alarm temperature, such as 37.3℃. When monitoring the body temperature of multiple people in real time within the effective range, the system will automatically compare the acquired temperature with the alarm temperature. Once it is higher than 37.3℃, the system will automatically alarm and automatically record the infrared temperature image and visible light image of the current fever person for the staff to view and confirm. As a high-end product, the XT236 also has a face recognition function, which can automatically capture multiple fever people at the same time. Such a design can greatly reduce the arrangement and work of the staff. Each system only needs to arrange 1-2 people to do the temperature confirmation work, which greatly improves the efficiency of prevention and control screening.

Reporter: Through the above introduction, I believe everyone has a basic understanding of infrared thermal imaging temperature measurement. The current pneumonia epidemic prevention and control situation is still severe. We also call on the majority of netizens not to believe in rumors and actively cooperate with the temperature measurement work of security personnel. This is not only to understand your own physical condition, but also to support the prevention and control work. The last question is, what is the current production capacity of Guide Infrared? Can the products be transported out of Wuhan?

Zhang: At present, all of Guide's infrared rapid temperature screening systems use infrared detectors produced by Guide with independent intellectual property rights. Since the core components are not controlled by others, Guide Infrared can actively respond to the early stage of the outbreak, arrange production, and provide the society with infrared rapid temperature screening systems as soon as possible, effectively preventing the spread of the epidemic. In addition to the XT236 and MS series that are currently the main supplies, we are also constantly developing and upgrading other products. In the near future, 3-4 models will be launched to respond to epidemic prevention and control. At the same time, we will maintain a 24-hour shift production system, so that we can fully release production capacity. We have added a production plan of 15,000 sets, which will be produced at a rate of 1,000 sets per day, providing more products in a short time to help front-line personnel in epidemic prevention and control. In terms of transportation, as an important epidemic prevention and control material, the relevant departments have opened a green channel for us, and there is no need to worry about this.

Of course, given the growing demand for infrared body temperature screening devices across the country, we sincerely hope that all infrared manufacturers across the country can resume work as soon as possible, and work together to win this smokeless battle against the epidemic!
