Autonomous vehicles require extremely precise positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) systems as they are spread across the road and inside and outside the vehicle. One of the challenges of PNT system deployment is the need for unobstructed coverage in "urban canyons." Lowering GNSS systems to street level can provide seamless and reliable PNT. To provide advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functionality, the vehicle itself has evolved into a mobile data center containing multiple computing units and communication gateways interconnected by high-speed networks. The entire system requires dozens of high-frequency, low-jitter clocks with automotive reliability. We will show how to optimize clock trees to reduce design complexity and risk.
