Why can offline LED lighting power supply dominate the market?

Recently, we all know that LED replacement light bulbs and other new LED lighting are developing very rapidly, and the main market is trending towards offline LED lighting power supplies. Peter B. Green, director of the LED department of International Rectifier Corporation (IR), pointed out that the offline LED power supply market is mainly divided into two parts: high power and low power, roughly taking 50W as the dividing line, excluding low-voltage applications such as handheld devices.

Integrated LED-based light bulb replacement products mostly use simple, non-isolated buck regulator LED driver circuits. These products use the minimum number of components and the lowest cost, but must also provide sufficient lumens per watt, a power factor higher than 0.7, and have standard triac dimmer dimming ability.

Products on the market that cannot meet these performance requirements are gradually being replaced, and the requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy's "Energy Star program" are also one of the reasons for this change.

Why can offline LED lighting power supply dominate the market?

High power LED drivers often require insulation isolation to meet UL standards. This often requires a power factor greater than 0.9 and dimming capabilities, which may be achieved by methods other than basic dimmers. It also needs to produce at least the same lumens per watt as fluorescent lamps and have a longer lifespan.

Allan Lin, general manager of Diodes' LED lighting business unit, believes that the development of offline LED lighting power supplies will change the sales perspective of LEDs, from selling large quantities of DC/DC power supplies to low-current, high-brightness LEDs (used in mobile phones, signs and notebook computers) , to higher current LEDs selling AC/DC power supplies (generally for lighting applications). This will enhance the overall general lighting AC/DC LED driver market and increase the demand for lower cost power supply components.

LED backlight TVs and other large LCD TV applications also have other room for development. They are moving from CCFL to LED, further promoting the development of higher current LED, higher voltage power supply market, and increasing the requirements for higher power LED driving many large parallel chains.
