Research organization Omdia released its latest report stating that due to tight component supply and low terminal inventory levels, demand for laptop panels will remain high in the second half of the year, and annual shipments will be increased from 263 million pieces to 273 million pieces, with the annual growth rate expanding to 19%, which will help boost panel factory shipments.
Omdia pointed out that since the second quarter of last year, laptop panels have maintained a growth trend for five consecutive quarters. Although brand manufacturers are worried about over-ordering of panels, from the analysis of overall demand and terminal inventory, laptops are still expected to maintain a high level in the second half of the year. It is estimated that the proportion of laptop shipments in the first and second half of the year will reach 49:51.
In addition to the high demand, some panel manufacturers have also raised their notebook panel shipment targets for this year. Among them, after BOE's acquisition of CEC Panda, the annual notebook panel shipments will reach 75.5 million pieces, setting a historical high. HKC, LGD, and second-tier panel manufacturers Sharp, Innolux, and Longteng Optoelectronics have also cooperated with customers to raise their shipment targets.
Omida believes that the demand for consumer laptops will gradually slow down, while commercial demand will continue to grow, which will support the overall shipment of laptop panels. Among them, the global demand for education projects is expected to stimulate Chromebook shipments to increase to 39 million units this year, a year-on-year increase of 51%, becoming one of the main driving forces.
However, strong demand from brand manufacturers has also raised concerns about over-ordering in the market. Omida said that in the second half of the year, it is still necessary to continue to pay attention to terminal inventory levels, manufacturer cost management, and changes in supply chain component prices.
