On May 24, at the award ceremony of the HarmonyOS Developer Innovation Competition, Wang Chenglu, President of Huawei's Consumer Business Software Department, said that HarmonyOS will soon be an open source system and will launch harmonyOS courses in 15 schools including Wuhan University.

At present, the Hongmeng OS system already has an exclusive and unique software format HPK, which also means that Huawei will definitely increase its efforts in the future to gradually improve the shortcomings of the current system ecology of the Hongmeng OS system.

Moreover, after Huawei's Hongmeng OS system started large-scale public beta testing, it directly broke the rumor that Hongmeng was just Android with a different shell. It directly focused on excellent fluency and attracted many users.

As we all know, Huawei's Hongmeng system has attracted global attention since its release, from industry giants to countless loyal users around the world. After all, once Huawei has built a complete ecosystem, it is entirely possible to break the monopoly of Google Android and Apple in the system ecosystem and form a new market structure. Therefore, Hongmeng system also has a large number of supporters.

The most concerned and discussed topic is whether Huawei will adapt to other mobile phone manufacturers in addition to its own mobile phone products. After all, due to chip restrictions, Huawei's mobile phone shipments have dropped sharply. If other mobile phones can also use Hongmeng system, users can experience it without changing their mobile phones, which is of course very conducive to the promotion and popularization of Hongmeng system ecosystem. Now it seems that everyone's wish may come true.

It is reported that the amount of open source code of Hongmeng this time is about 8GB, and that of AOSP is almost over 60GB. In addition, it is best to compile on a machine with 32G memory.

Combined with the fact that Huawei OpenHarmony has already started submitting the first batch of L2 branch codes to multiple repositories, the L2 branch is a version without any Android code and is a pure Hongmeng system.

The L3-L5 branch is a dual-framework version compatible with Android and will also be open source.

Earlier, at the Huawei Hongmeng Partner Summit, the vice president of Huawei's consumer business AI and smart full-scenario business department made it clear that the Hongmeng system is completely open source and open, and welcomes other third-party mobile phone manufacturers to adopt the Hongmeng system and build an open source ecosystem together. Although no specific plans have been announced, it shows Huawei's attitude and position on the Hongmeng system. It not only does not exclude, but also welcomes other mobile phone manufacturers to use the Hongmeng system to jointly build an ecosystem. Although it is only a few sentences, it is Huawei's greatest sincerity. The Hongmeng system is open source and welcomes friendly companies to adopt it. It does not intend to take the Hongmeng system for itself, and is more inclined to a completely open source model. For the future overall planning of the Hongmeng system, Huawei has set a small goal of at least 300 million Hongmeng devices this year, including 200 million Huawei-owned devices and 100 million external devices.

Currently, Harmony OS 2.0 has been launched for public testing, and will be officially launched on a large scale in June. According to the data released by Huawei, the Harmony 2.0 system is also open source, with about 4.6 million lines of key code, equivalent to 30% of the 15.25 million lines of Android 10, and about 18,000 key APIs (application programming interfaces), equivalent to half of Android 10, and the size of the installation package is reduced to 60-70%, which means that the Harmony system is lighter than the Android system, with the same functions, smaller size, higher efficiency, and lower hardware configuration requirements, and is suitable for various devices such as mobile phones, tablets, wearable devices, TVs, sensors, etc. This also leaves ample space for other devices to adapt to the Harmony system.

However, at this stage, Hongmeng OS is not mature enough, and a large number of apps have not yet been adapted, so we can only hope that changes will occur in the future.

But it has been open sourced at this stage, and perhaps in the future, other manufacturers will be the first to enter the Hongmeng system. At that time, this manufacturer should be very popular.
