As the saying goes, all the past is just a prologue. In July 2020, Nvidia's market value exceeded Intel's, and the market value of GPU companies became No. 1 among semiconductor companies. This is a milestone in the history of GPU development. GPUs have also ushered in a "new turning point" of rapid development, and have gone from supporting roles to leading roles and continue to shine.
Let’s take a look at the GPU “competition” arena: on the one hand, GPU continues to deeply expand in application areas such as enterprise digital transformation and upgrading, data visualization, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and autonomous driving; on the other hand, the technology continues to evolve, and cloud collaboration, heterogeneous integration, etc. are advancing in depth, and the technologies in the fields of traditional desktop/server GPUs and mobile GPUs are also penetrating each other. For example, Apple’s self-developed M1 chip has moved from traditional mobile GPUs to desktops. All these “changes” have allowed GPUs to unleash abundant potential and are becoming a new frontier in the semiconductor industry.
The numbers prove it: According to Verified Market Research, the global GPU market size will continue to grow from 2020 to 2027, reaching US$185.31 billion in 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 32.82%.
Faced with the promising GPU market, what is the quality of domestically produced GPUs?
It has to be said that, like other high-end chips, this market is basically occupied by foreign giants such as Nvidia, Intel, AMD, etc., and they are accelerating their conquest while continuing to innovate. Although some domestic companies such as Jingjiawei, Hangjin, and CSSC 709 Institute have tried the waters first and made certain progress and breakthroughs in technology, ecology and application, there is still a big gap compared with the giants.
As the tide of the times and history interweave and move forward, domestic GPUs have to stand on new historical demands and journeys. In the context of strong confrontation and increasing uncertainty in global high-tech, domestic substitution and supply chain security have become increasingly important, and GPUs must not become "enclaves"; and under the integration trend of traditional and emerging application drivers and innovative technologies, GPUs, which play a leading role, have become the key to success or failure.
For domestic GPUs to truly "break through the barriers", it is clear that cooperation and reconstruction of the entire industry chain from IP to design, to software ecology and then to applications is needed. To this end, the 14th "Jiwei Dragon Gate Array" of Jiwei.com will hold an online forum on "How to Build a Domestic GPU Industry Chain" at 19:00 on May 14, 2021 (Friday), inviting representatives and experts from well-known companies in the industry to conduct in-depth interpretation and analysis on the path to breakthrough for domestic GPUs.
This issue of Longmenzhen invited Jiang Kai, Chief Architect of Inspur Science Research Institute, Chen Zuwen, Vice President of GPU Marketing of Innosilicon, Shi Xin, Vice President of Imagination China, and Han Xiaomin, General Manager of Aijiwei Consulting, to conduct detailed analysis and discussion on hot topics such as the competition landscape and development opportunities of GPUs, how to solve the technical and application challenges of domestic GPUs, how to accelerate the creation of domestic GPU industry chain, and the future path of domestic GPUs. The event was hosted online by Murong Sujuan, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Aijiwei.
