As expected, Microsoft discontinued its Cortana mobile app today. The company has now stopped all support for third-party Cortana and has canceled the Cortana app on iOS and Android devices.

Cortana was initially released in November 2018, but apparently failed to gain a large enough user base in just a short period of time.

As Microsoft's support page explains, starting today, March 31, the mobile app is no longer supported and reminders and lists are no longer available in the app, although they can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows. In addition, Cortana reminders, lists, and tasks will automatically sync to the Microsoft To Do app, which is available as a free download on iOS and Android.

The plan to shut down the apps was announced in July 2020, when Microsoft said it would move to "transformative AI assistant experiences" across its Microsoft 365 apps, which would involve refocusing its "areas of innovation and development."

Since then, Microsoft has improved Cortana's integration in Microsoft 365, such as introducing personalized, actionable briefings for Exchange users in Outlook and adding Cortana to the Teams mobile app for tasks such as managing calendars, emails, and attending meetings.
