First, the flash charging product line is richer. 125W is already higher than the power of many current laptops, and the mobile phone charger can be used for the computer. Second, the support range is wider. In addition to OPPO's own VOOC and SuperVOOC standards, many products this time support multiple fast charging protocol standards, such as PPS, PD, QC, etc., which makes it possible for OPPO's chargers to charge products of other brands.
OPPO released four products and related technologies at yesterday's conference
At the exchange meeting, when a media asked why high-power PPS or PD was not supported before, Zhang Jialiang replied that such progress requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors, including technical solutions, device maturity, technology maturity, consumer demand, and one's own technical reserves.
Simply put, this is a gradual evolutionary process, not something that can be achieved overnight.
Everything can be charged
Technological reserves are one aspect. When we have the ability to produce higher power density and greater power, it is a suitable entry point to ensure that the product’s portability and reliability are up to standard.
Zhang Jialiang believes that it is not appropriate to be "radical" in making products related to "electricity". He does not want to take risks or adventures. He must control the rhythm according to the market rhythm and the planning of his own products. Moreover, every product, or every industry, has its own rhythm.
In addition, the compatibility between fast charging of different standards is also a problem. Zhang Jialiang explained that if more products are to be compatible, power is also a threshold. This is related to the technical maturity mentioned above: only when the technology is in place and the power is increased can we talk about compatibility. Otherwise, compatibility with low-power PD or PPS will not be of much significance to users.
Yesterday's new products are compatible with multiple standards
All these factors are in place, which is the result of OPPO's press conference yesterday. Once the product is made, standard compatibility will become a natural thing.
Recently, Chinese mobile phone manufacturers seem to have quickly entered the 100W era. Some media asked Zhang Jialiang what he thought of this situation, and whether OPPO has any plans to work with vivo and Xiaomi to jointly develop fast charging standards.
Zhang Jialiang replied that in fact, the press conference today promoted that everything can be fast charged, which has already shown OPPO's idea. Of course, there will definitely be differences between different manufacturers, which is determined by different products. "For example, all standards, whether national or industry standards, are generally 60 or 70 points. We dare not set it to 100 points, just to ensure compatibility and ensure that everyone can do it."
Zhang Jialiang believes that compatibility is definitely a general trend, which will make it more convenient for consumers and help save energy and reduce emissions, which is also OPPO's goal. However, some products cannot do this, and there are also product orientations (he means product positioning such as high-end and low-end mobile phones), and even responsibilities and rights are defined between different manufacturers. These are both technical reasons, but also have nothing to do with technology.
VOOC will open up authorization cautiously
In addition to being compatible with other standards, OPPO's own VOOC and SuperVOOC may also be exported to other manufacturers, that is, authorized to other manufacturers. When asked about this issue, Zhang Jialiang first gave some numbers: OPPO has currently opened up 23 licenses to the outside world and has more than 1,250 patents for fast charging.
At the same time, he also admitted that "we are cautious about external authorization. We have never done this before. It is not just a purely technical issue, but involves many aspects."
The current number of flash charging users worldwide
Zhang Jialiang revealed that the first generation of VOOC developed 23 companies, which was actually a deliberate control of the pace. In principle, Zhang Jialiang certainly hopes that the more partners, supported products, and authorized partners, the better. However, from the perspective of risk and control, we must be cautious. If authorization is abused, it will damage the industry and the circle. "That will not be convenient for consumers. It will make consumers lose trust in technology, products, and even the industry. This is why we deliberately slowed down the pace."
As for SuperVOOC, it has greater power, higher technical threshold, and more difficult technical points and product control. Battery safety is a very cautious matter. These are the reasons why the authorization has not been released yet, and why we have been very cautious.
However, Zhang Jialiang said that authorization will be gradually released in the future. OPPO has joined hands with TUV Rheinland Laboratory and many other institutions in the industry to work together to promote the improvement of relevant testing standards and protocols, so that everyone can be on the same track. "On the same line, we can think and work together to make this product truly valuable to users."
