Samsung has previously launched a number of foldable smartphones and is also the first company to develop a 108MP mobile camera sensor. Now, a newly released patent reveals that Samsung is using six cameras to expand its mobile phone photography, according to foreign media SamMobile.
Samsung applied for a patent last year that suggests the company's six-camera smartphone setup includes tiltable image sensors. The 55-page patent document, titled "Apparatus and method for operating multiple digital cameras," explains how Samsung plans to use five wide-angle cameras and one telephoto camera to improve image quality in a wide range of scenes. Samsung is also developing products with other camera sensors.
Each camera sensor in Samsung's patent can be tilted independently, a feature that can be used to optimize the camera for various scenes and higher quality. For example, the left and right sensors can be tilted towards the edges, while the central camera sensor can be set to remain vertical to capture panoramic images. Information from all sensors can be combined to create a high-quality image. The camera setting can also be used to shoot panoramic scenes with a bokeh effect.
IT Home learned that according to Samsung's patent, a multi-camera setup with a tiltable sensor can be used to capture clearer images in low-light conditions. This setup also helps to achieve better focus range and higher dynamic range in various situations, which is not possible with current smartphone cameras. The technology can also be used to capture wider videos with better image stabilization and focus range.
