ChangXin Storage Technologies Co., Ltd. and Wi-LAN Inc., a subsidiary of Quarterhill Inc. (TSX: QTRH) (NASDAQ: QTRH), today jointly announced that they have entered into a patent license agreement and a patent purchase agreement with Polaris Innovations Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of WiLAN, for DRAM patents developed by Qimonda, a former dynamic random access memory chip (DRAM) manufacturer.
According to the patent license agreement, Changxin Memory has obtained a large number of DRAM technology patents from Polaris. These patents come from the patent portfolio that Polaris purchased from Qimonda's parent company Infineon in June 2015 .
Pursuant to an independent patent purchase agreement, Changxin Storage purchased a considerable number of DRAM patents from Polaris.
The commercial confidential terms of this patent license and patent purchase agreement, including the transaction amount, are not disclosed here.
"Changxin Memory will continue to increase its accumulation of semiconductor core technologies and high-value intellectual property through independent research and development and cooperation with international partners such as WiLAN," said Zhu Yiming, Chairman and CEO of Changxin Memory. "The two agreements mark new steps that Changxin Memory has taken to improve its intellectual property portfolio, further strengthen its technology strategy, and safeguard its DRAM business operations."
"Changxin Memory is a leader in China's DRAM industry. We are pleased to see that Changxin Memory recognizes the value of Polaris' DRAM patents. These two agreements demonstrate that Changxin Memory attaches great importance to intellectual property and is committed to continued investment in research and development. We believe that the rights and interests obtained will give Changxin Memory a competitive advantage in the industry and help Changxin Memory continue to develop key DRAM technologies." said Michael Vladescu, President and CEO of WiLAN. "The agreement with Changxin Memory will enable WiLAN to further develop business opportunities in key emerging markets such as China, thereby continuing to create more value for its parent company Quarterhill and investors."
