Edge-Core, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Taiwan's major switch manufacturer Accton, announced that it has passed Facebook's Express Wi-Fi certification, becoming the first and only Wi-Fi manufacturer in Asia to pass Facebook's certification cooperation. At the same time, Edge-Core is now negotiating cooperation plans with several Southeast Asian operators.

Edgecore is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Accton and operates its own brand Edge-core. Its first Express Wi-Fi Certified product, ECWO5211-L, is an enterprise-level dual-band, dual-module Wave 2 outdoor wireless base station. This product is mainly designed for outdoor or industrial environments.

Industry insiders pointed out that Facebook has been actively cooperating with global telecommunications companies and network equipment manufacturers in recent years to help developing countries increase Internet connectivity rates. Express Wi-Fi is part of Facebook's Internet.org plan to increase global Internet connectivity rates.

Industry insiders said that due to the relatively backward network infrastructure in remote areas and developing countries, coupled with the high cost of 3G/4G mobile network connection, network connectivity is facing the dilemma of not being popularized.

Facebook plans to cooperate with local telecom operators to set up multiple Wi-Fi hotspots to provide low-cost, high-bandwidth networks as an alternative to mobile data services, in order to make the Internet more popular.

Currently, Facebook's Internet.org project has cooperated with Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel in India. At more than 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across India, users only need to spend as little as 10 rupees (about 1 yuan) to get 100MB of Wi-Fi data.
