According to businesskorea, Tmax OS will release the Open Edition (OE) of the Tmax Operating System (OS), which is an open source version of Tmax OS that anyone can use for free. This will serve as an alternative operating system to Microsoft Windows and create an ecosystem.
Tmax OS OE has the same functions as the existing Tmax OS commercial version, except that it limits some functions for the enterprise environment. Users can use a variety of applications such as Linux-based applications, as well as their own developed Office program Two Office and web browser Two Gate.
Tmax emphasizes that it has more than 400 professional researchers and technicians who can provide stable and continuous Tmax OS OE upgrades and technical support. Its graphical environment makes it easy for new MS Windows users to use Tmax OS OE.
In addition to the release of Tmax OS OE, the company is also considering cooperation with other open operating systems such as Cloud OS and Harmonica OS.
The Tmax system has experienced many twists and turns over the past decade, and behind it is the bumpy road of South Korea's self-developed operating system. The release of Tmax OS dates back to 2016. The system was released by South Korean software company TmaxSoft, and the company's goal at the time was to challenge international software giants such as Oracle and Microsoft. The ambition was great, but the prospects were worrying. The system was frozen during the release of the beta version, and therefore received a lot of criticism. After two years of repair, it was re-launched in 2018 and obtained the GS certification issued by the National Telecommunications Technology Association, entering the domestic B2B software market currently dominated by Microsoft.
Tmax said the system's outlook is similar to Windows, enabling cross-platform compatibility and the use of software programs in Windows.
As the only computer operating system developer in South Korea, Tmax OS was still full of enthusiasm at that time. The predecessor of Tmax OS was Tmax Window released in 2009. This system was neither based on Windows nor Linux family members, and its market was mainly in South Korea. Therefore, it lacked overall competitiveness, and its enthusiasm was met with a cold shoulder and did not attract public attention.
At that time, the company's goal was to achieve 2 trillion won (about 1.8 billion US dollars) in revenue by 2020 and occupy 10% of the global market share.
With lofty ambitions and being the only company in Korea, Tmax must have a heavy burden on its shoulders. However, there are more than just Tmax who want to challenge the status of Windows. What Tmax needs to strive for now is to gain a foothold in Korea.
