According to foreign media reports, AMD CEO Dirk Meyer said that the company may launch tablet chips with powerful graphics processing capabilities in the future.
"I expect that over time, tablets will evolve to different form factors and thicknesses," Mayer said. "We think tablets are still an emerging market." Currently the most popular tablet is Apple's iPad, which uses the company's A4 processor. Intel has targeted the tablet market with its Oak Trail Atom processor.
Meyer said: "The optimal power consumption of a tablet is 2-3 watts, which is slightly higher than half of the power consumption of a fanless netbook. I expect customers will consider using the design in the netbook for tablets. AMD may launch tablet chips in the next two years." He said: "We are currently taking a wait-and-see attitude towards investing a lot of R&D resources in this field. When the tablet market is big enough, we will invest a lot of R&D energy. Frankly speaking, AMD is still very weak in the notebook market, and it doesn't make much sense to invest a lot of R&D expenses in the tablet market. When the market is big enough, it's not too late for us to invest. The AMD tablet chips we provide will integrate powerful graphics and video technologies."
"I think tablets are disrupting the notebook market and will cannibalize the netbook and notebook markets," he said. "Of course, the tablet phenomenon has become the biggest variable in our customers' market forecasts, but we still see notebook growth prospects."
