Vehicle OBC
Electric vehicles can be divided into the following categories according to charging methods: hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), extended-range hybrid electric vehicles (EREV), battery-powered pure electric vehicles (BEV), and hydrogen fuel cell pure electric vehicles (FCEV). Among them, PHEV, EREV and BEV must all go through the step of external charging, and these vehicles all need an on-board charger (OBC).
OBC can use single-phase or three-phase power and provide up to 22kW of power for the fastest charging. Since all batteries need to be charged using direct current, the core function of the OBC is to rectify the power input and convert it into a charging voltage suitable for the battery.
There are two main power stages in an OBC. First, the PFC stage maintains the phase relationship between the input current and voltage, minimizing the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the line/grid current, improving overall energy efficiency.
The second power stage is a DC/DC converter, which takes the DC output from the PFC stage and converts it to the level required to charge the battery. The output voltage and current of the converter vary over time based on the overall health and state of charge of the battery.
