On April 11, 2024, WPG Holdings, a leading international semiconductor component distributor dedicated to the Asia-Pacific market, announced that its subsidiary Pinjia has launched an AI portrait background removal solution based on MediaTek's Genio 700 platform.

In the fast-paced workplace ecosystem, video conferencing has become an indispensable communication and collaboration tool in daily work. However, although video conferencing has greatly promoted the convenience of work, sometimes participants may not be able to enter the meeting environment in time, making the video screen messy and causing a certain negative impact on the professional image. To solve this problem, WPG launched the AI portrait background removal solution based on the MediaTek Genio 700 platform. The solution can identify people with one click and remove the messy background, making the work environment more rigorous and the meeting communication more professional while avoiding privacy exposure.

MediaTek's Genio 700 is a high-performance edge AI IoT platform with excellent edge processing responsiveness, superior multimedia capabilities, and a seamless multi-tasking operating system. In addition, the Genio 700 platform supports a variety of network connections and operating systems, including Yocto Linux, Ubuntu, and Android systems, to meet the various needs of user development.
This solution uses the powerful artificial intelligence computing unit (APU) of Genio 700, and through the big data of human body and skeleton, uses advanced algorithms and recognition model technology to achieve fast and accurate definition of human shape. The basic operating principle of this solution includes capturing images, detecting human body, extracting human body shape, establishing an accurate human shape database, and comparing the quantified data with the human shape feature values in the database. After finding the correct human body position, the cluttered background outside the human body is removed, thus presenting an ideal picture effect.
In video conferences, this solution can remove the portrait background in a timely manner, allowing participants to focus more on the content of the meeting and improve work efficiency. Similarly, in video calls, this solution can also better protect the privacy of users, avoid accidentally exposing the background of individuals or private spaces during calls, and improve video security.
