Akamai Edge Platform Enhancements Include Free Usage Tier, Faster Access to Data and API Traffic Acceleration
SAN FRANCISCO, June 16, 2021 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Akamai) (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in solutions that secure and deliver digital experiences, today announced powerful enhancements to help Akamai customers create and deliver better user experiences at the edge.
Since its launch, Akamai EdgeWorkers serverless edge computing solution has been enabling developers to build and deliver digital experiences through Akamai's massive global platform. In the latest release, Akamai provides developers with richer features and more powerful edge control.
The latest enhancements to Akamai’s edge platform include:
Providing more flexibility for EdgeWorkers, making it easier for developers to deploy code at the edge. New resource tiers package CPU and memory together and provide commensurate pricing plans, giving developers the flexibility to choose based on their needs. Both tiers (Basic Compute Tier, for applications that require lower CPU and memory usage; Dynamic Compute Tier, for more demanding applications) include free usage of 60 million EdgeWorkers events per month (up to 30 million per tier).
EdgeKV provides high-availability, low-latency data access for custom code at the edge. EdgeKV is a globally distributed key-value store that simplifies and accelerates database functions for edge applications. It does not involve complex query languages and supports a wide range of data types. For example, a sports and entertainment company deploys EdgeKV with EdgeWorkers to perform complex geolocation calculations. This feature associates users' longitude and latitude coordinates with state boundaries to help ensure that its services comply with local laws.
API Acceleration is Akamai's newest delivery product, optimized specifically for API traffic. It supports massive scale while improving reliability and performance. API-intensive applications are becoming more popular, and API traffic is exploding. In 2020, Akamai delivered more than 300 trillion API requests, a year-over-year increase of 53%. API Acceleration uses dedicated hardware, reserved capacity, and priority routing to help ensure that API transactions are completed successfully.
“Since the introduction of EdgeWorkers, we’ve been inspired by the innovations our customers are seeing in delivering exceptional user experiences through Akamai’s Intelligent Edge,” said Lelah Manz, Senior Vice President of the Edge Technologies Team at Akamai. “With these latest enhancements, we hope to accelerate that innovation by empowering developers to create truly transformative applications at the edge. We know we’ve only just scratched the surface, and we can’t wait to see the new ideas you’ll come up with using EdgeWorkers and the Akamai platform.”
