Strategy Analytics' latest research report points out that in Q3 2020, HP defeated Lenovo for the first time in recent years with a slight advantage and regained its leadership in the notebook computer market. Overall, as the world turned to new options for remote work, education, and digitalization, the industry accelerated its pace last quarter, with total shipments increasing by 34% year-on-year. In the face of record demand, such a high growth rate is actually limited by tight supply, and as winter and more epidemic isolation measures approach, the competitive landscape of the industry has added more drama.

Chirag Upadhyay, senior research analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: “Q3 productivity could have been higher if some vendors were able to provide more devices to meet the high demand. Supply will remain a key issue as demand is expected to remain strong as the northern hemisphere enters winter and global COVID-19 infection rates rise. As the epidemic still lingers around the world, consumers have begun purchasing products before the holiday season to prepare for the new normal of working and learning from home.”

Eric Smith, Director of Connected Computing at Strategy Analytics, added, “Chromebooks experienced strong growth in both the commercial and consumer sectors as the OS continues to be a favorite choice for schools and students in developed markets. Meanwhile, the gaming and ultra-mobile segments performed well as consumers spent more to meet their multitasking (entertainment and productivity) needs and expect to use their devices for longer periods of time.”
