Autel had accused DJI of infringing one of its patents (U.S. Patent No. 9, 260, 184), which is titled "Small Unmanned Rotorcraft." A U.S. judge has ruled that Chinese drone giant DJI has infringed the patents of a small drone manufacturer, and he has recommended that most DJI drone models be removed from shelves and imports blocked.

The patent describes a "rotary wing aircraft device having arms extending from a body, and a rotor assembly connected to one end of each arm." The drone described and illustrated in the patent has many similarities to the DJI Mavic Pro.

The ITC's chief administrative law judge thought so too, ruling that DJI did infringe the patent. He recommended that the following drones be banned from import and sale in the United States: Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum, Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic Air and Spark. If the judge's ruling and recommendation are upheld by the full ITC committee, these drones could be kicked out of the US market as early as July. Autel is also pushing to expand the import ban to other DJI drones, including the Phantom 4 and Inspire series.

The ruling was made on March 2 at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). The ruling was issued by international law firm Steptoe, which represented Autel Robotics USA, a Chinese drone company based in Seattle, Washington, and we will also pay attention to follow-up information on the case.
