Great Wall Motors announced that the Spotlight Automotive production base project has been approved by the Jiangsu Provincial Development and Reform Commission. It is learned that the Spotlight Automotive project jointly invested by Great Wall and BMW will be officially launched in Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province on November 29. Industry insiders said that the project approval is only the first step. After the new energy vehicle market enters a reshuffle period, whether Spotlight Automotive can gain consumer recognition and continue to survive is the real test it needs to face.

The announcement shows that the planned start time of the Guangshou Automobile Production Base is 2020, and the planned completion time is 2022. The total investment of the project is about 5.1 billion yuan. The construction scale is to produce 160,000 fuel passenger cars for full export and pure electric passenger car research and development per year. The construction period is 24 months. The project covers an area of about 930 acres, with an additional construction area of about 274,657 square meters, and about 460 sets of production and testing equipment will be purchased. The construction content of the fuel passenger car manufacturing part includes stamping workshops, welding workshops, painting workshops, assembly workshops and test tracks and other facilities, and produces and manufactures fully exported fuel passenger cars; the construction content of the pure electric passenger car research and development trial production part includes research and development rooms such as technical buildings, and researches and develops a new generation of safe, environmentally friendly and intelligent electric vehicles.

The cooperation between Great Wall Motors and BMW is not an isolated case. In recent years, with the development of the domestic new energy vehicle market and the advancement of the "double points" assessment, foreign automakers have set up new joint venture electric vehicle companies in China. In August 2017, Ford and Zotye signed a memorandum of cooperation, and the two parties planned to establish a joint venture engaged in the research and development, manufacturing, sales and service of pure electric passenger vehicles. At the end of 2017, Volkswagen and JAC established a joint venture company - JAC Volkswagen, which mainly engages in new energy business. In March this year, Geely and Daimler also announced that they would establish a joint venture to build smart into a high-end electric smart car brand.

Professionals said: "In the face of the new energy vehicle market entering a period of reshuffle, strong alliances and mutual support are a wise move to improve competitiveness. However, if both shareholders do not attach enough importance to the project, or the cooperation between the two parties is not successful enough, the joint venture project will inevitably end up being eliminated by the market."
