Recently, Liang Quan, spokesperson and head of the marketing department of ARM China, clarified for the first time as an official of ARM China that it was untrue that Arm and Arm China had stopped supplying Huawei, and said that they are still cooperating with Huawei and that the subsequent infrastructure can also be licensed to Chinese customers, including Huawei. ARM originally had a very good relationship with Huawei.
ARM is a mobile phone core chip manufacturer. On May 22 this year, ARM China canceled the new product (AI-related) launch conference originally scheduled to be held in Shenzhen in early June. It is said that ARM (UK) has asked employees to "stop all contracts, support and pending agreements with Huawei and its subsidiaries". Huawei has since responded accordingly, and ARM seems to have stopped cooperating with Huawei.
At the IFA exhibition, Yu Chengdong said in an interview with the media, "OK, I know what you are going to ask. At present, we can use ARM and we are still using it. At the same time, we have obtained permanent licenses for specific ARM architectures, so we can use them. But for future ARM architectures, if we cannot use them, we have also prepared our own CPUs, so don't worry, our CPUs may perform better, just like our NPUs now have great performance. We have spare tire versions of both CPUs and NPUs."
Huawei's president Ren Zhengfei recently said in an exclusive interview with Britain's Sky TV, "We support ARM. When I met with the EU 10 or 20 years ago, the EU believed that Europe's information industry was backward and that the opportunities had been snatched away by the United States. I said that we can still work together. More than a decade ago, we supported ARM. ARM has developed to where it is today, with sales of $32 billion. With the money, it will develop further. Europe now has CPUs, and this is our contribution to Europe."
But even so, Huawei must be prepared for both scenarios when it comes to the CPU.
He added, "We still support the ARM architecture, just as we support the Android ecosystem. If they don't let us use it, we will use our own at that time, and it will even have better performance."
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business, who is attending the IFA exhibition in Germany, responded to the risk of ARM supply disruption by saying that Huawei can use ARM now, and if it cannot be used in the future, Huawei has also prepared its own CPU, and the performance may be better.
