As a technological fortress, the intelligent chassis has basically been conquered by domestic players.
First of all, the most core technology of the wire-controlled chassis is wire-controlled braking. Monitoring data from Gaogong Intelligent Automobile Research Institute shows that in 2023, 7.9577 million new passenger cars (excluding imports and exports) with standard wire-controlled braking (One/Two Box) were delivered in the Chinese market, a year-on-year increase of 60.31%, and the installation rate increased to 37.68%.
At present, local manufacturers including Betheli, Liker Technology, Tongyu Automotive Technology, and Bibost have achieved large-scale mass production of pre-installed products. The market share of local suppliers has increased from 8% in 2022 to about 20% in 2023 (excluding the self-developed part of the OEM).
As for EMB, the final stage of wire control brake technology, some domestic suppliers are also accelerating the layout of EMB technology research and development and mass production. For example, Tongyu Automotive Technology started winter calibration of EMB samples last year. The system's front calipers can achieve a maximum force of 60,000N, and the rear calipers can achieve a maximum force of 30,000N, meeting the needs of all passenger cars.
It is obvious that local players are constantly attacking the technical barriers in sub-sectors such as wire-controlled braking, wire-controlled steering, and wire-controlled suspension, driving the chassis field to continue to develop in depth towards integration and wire control, and the outline of a new round of technological development is becoming clearer.
On the hardware level, following the centralized development pace of the vehicle's electronic and electrical architecture, the chassis is integrating more functions into a single module. For example, key controllers of the suspension system, steering system, and control system are integrated into a compact intelligent chassis control unit to achieve more precise coordination of the vehicle's steering and braking.
At the software level, a unified chassis control software platform is expected to emerge. Through software algorithms, the chassis can process and analyze data collected by different sensors in real time, achieving coordinated division of labor among various components.
From the perspective of vehicle intelligence, in order to achieve cross-domain integration of intelligent driving and chassis, connect the vehicle's perception, decision-making, and execution, and provide a more human-like driving experience, many OEMs and suppliers are also trying to solve problems such as software interoperability and control algorithms between different chassis components, in order to quickly accumulate leading technological advantages.
The above-mentioned technological foundation is also quietly catalyzing the explosion of the smart chassis market, and a new market scale and localization pattern is being reconstructed.
What is particularly obvious is that as domestic automakers compete to launch intelligent chassis, such as Yunnian X, Lingxi chassis, Tuling chassis, Tianxing chassis, AI intelligent chassis, etc., they are pushing the chassis towards comprehensive digitalization and intelligence, and also popularizing intelligent chassis to lower-priced models through technology iteration and large-scale cost reduction.
Take air suspension as an example. A few years ago, it was the exclusive symbol of luxury cars worth nearly one million yuan, such as Mercedes-Benz S and Audi A8. But now domestic new energy vehicles have equipped it in models priced at 200,000 yuan or less. For example, the dark blue G318, which is priced at 199,900 yuan, is a model that has all three configurations: air suspension, CDC adjustable damping shock absorber and active magic carpet comfort configuration.
This also means that under the major trends of vehicle intelligence, cross-domain integration, and comprehensive wire control, the market opportunities for smart chassis are becoming more prominent. At the same time, the value map of the supply chain will be redistributed, and a new round of market reshuffle has arrived.
In order to accurately grasp the development trends of various segments of smart cars, including smart chassis, the 2024 (8th) Gaogong Smart Car Annual Conference and the annual Golden Globe Awards Ceremony will be held in Shanghai from December 10th to 12th with the theme of "Asking about the Intelligence of the Whole Vehicle".
In the [Smart Chassis] session, experts from OEMs and chassis suppliers such as Geely Auto, Tongyu Automotive Technology, Liker Technology, and Bibost will give speeches on topics such as "Full digitalization and intelligence of the chassis", "Localization journey of wire-controlled brake EHB", "Soft and hard decoupling of VMC smart chassis", "The 'Chinese' new journey of air suspension", and "Independent research and development and industrialization of wire-controlled chassis".
Indeed, from the perspective of the evolution of the vehicle's electronic and electrical architecture, the deep integration of intelligent driving and intelligent chassis is an inevitable trend in the development of automotive intelligence and the next journey of the automotive chassis. It will have a profound impact and challenge on the performance and intelligence level of the vehicle.
"The wave of comprehensive digitalization and intelligence of the chassis will inevitably bring about technological innovation and intelligent upgrades. The industry will further increase its investment in the research and development of core technologies, especially in wire-controlled braking, autonomous driving and chassis collaborative control, and continue to improve the level of chassis intelligence to create a smarter and safer chassis control system." said Hui Zhifeng, founder and chairman of Liker Technology.
Liu Xiaohui, general manager of Bibost, told Gaogong Intelligent Automobile that Bibost has completed the integrated control of braking, steering and suspension XYZ axes, and can provide customers with more advanced integrated control solutions for intelligent chassis. The deep integration of intelligent driving and intelligent chassis can realize intelligent and precise control of the chassis, thereby improving the safety and driving experience of the car.
First, it improves driving safety. The intelligent chassis combined with the intelligent driving system can achieve more precise vehicle control and real-time monitoring, which helps reduce the accident rate;
Second, it enhances the driving experience. Through the intelligent chassis system, the vehicle can make adaptive adjustments based on road conditions and driving habits, providing a more comfortable and convenient driving experience;
The third is to optimize vehicle performance. The intelligent chassis can adjust the suspension, braking, power distribution and other systems in real time to improve the vehicle's handling and stability.
However, the deep integration of intelligent driving and intelligent chassis also faces many challenges. These include: the integration of intelligent driving and intelligent chassis requires complex technical support, which is technically difficult and has a long development cycle; and as the complexity of intelligent systems increases, the safety and reliability of functions are particularly important; at the same time, protecting user data and information security is also one of the important challenges.
In the view of Shu Qiang, chairman and general manager of Tongyu Automotive Technology, on the one hand, the deep integration of the three-layer technologies of perception, decision-making and execution will significantly improve the smoothness, handling stability and safety of vehicle driving and bring an excellent driving experience. This requires powerful hardware computing power, high-speed and reliable data communication, and highly robust software algorithms.
On the other hand, the deep integration of intelligent driving and intelligent chassis will lead to a reshaping of the vehicle's electronic and electrical architecture, and promote the development of various components from decentralized independent control to cross-domain integrated control; it requires close coordination of all links in the supply chain, which puts higher demands on the management and coordination capabilities of the supply chain.
So, moving into the next competition cycle, what changes will occur in the entire chassis industry and the competition landscape? Many suppliers have already explored the preliminary answers.
According to Liu Xiaohui, Biboster's integrated brake-by-wire system BIBC (One-Box) has been developed as a platform and delivered to OEM customers in large quantities. He believes that with the comprehensive transformation of the automotive industry, the chassis industry will develop towards higher intelligence and modularization, and the competition landscape will become more diversified and complex.
First, platform and modular design. In order to adapt to market demand and meet rapid iteration, chassis companies will conduct more platform and modular design to reduce development costs and shorten development cycles;
Second, competition is diversified. In addition to traditional car companies, emerging competitors such as technology companies and start-ups will enter the market, bringing more innovation and competition and promoting technological progress.
"As one of the core technology areas in which major automakers compete, the intelligent chassis will develop in the direction of cross-system collaborative control, cross-system redundant backup, rich sports modes, personalized driving styles, and so on. Cooperation and competition between supply chains will coexist. What is certain is that mastering chassis domain control technology will become a leader, but chassis domain control technology requires the design and control technology of core components such as wire-controlled braking, wire-controlled steering, wire-controlled suspension, and wire-controlled drive as a basis." Shu Qiang said.
The intelligent chassis technology is iterating very quickly and the market size is also growing rapidly. Tongyu Automobile already has a complete layout of core components for XYZ three-way control and chassis domain control products.
