ON Semiconductor’s leading EliteSiC MOSFET and diode technology will be key to Kempower’s electric vehicle fast charging solution

May 16, 2023 - ON Semiconductor, a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, announced a strategic agreement with Kempower to provide Kempower with EliteSiC MOSFETs and diodes for scalable electric vehicle (EV) charging piles. This collaboration enables Kempower to develop electric vehicle charging solution kits using a variety of power semiconductor technologies, including ON Semiconductor EliteSiC products. These devices will be used in active AC-DC front ends and DC-DC converters on the primary and secondary sides.

By adopting ON Semiconductor's EliteSiC MOSFET technology, Kempower's electric vehicle charging solution will be improved in power, performance and reliability. EliteSiC power devices have ultra-low on-resistance and gate and output capacitance, and lower power loss at high operating frequencies, thereby achieving higher system energy efficiency and smaller terminal system size. These advantages bring higher power density and overall reliability to Kempower's electric vehicle charging solution.

“ON Semiconductor’s EliteSiC power devices improve the energy efficiency of our electric vehicle charging solutions and reduce the size and weight,” said Petri Korhonen, chief engineer at Kempower . “In addition, ON Semiconductor’s vertically integrated supply chain and broad portfolio of intelligent power solutions enable us to consistently deliver best-in-class electric vehicle charging solutions to the market.”

According to the strategic agreement, Kempower will develop its electric vehicle charging solutions using the new EliteSiC D3 diodes and M3S MOSFETs. These charging piles can achieve dynamic load balancing to ensure adequate power distribution and provide drivers with a better charging experience. Kempower's charging solutions are scalable and modular, and can expand the system according to the needs of cloud charging system operators.

“Our manufacturing strength and resilient SiC supply chain ensure that we will deliver the agreed quantity of high-quality products to Kempower,” said Asif Jakwani, senior vice president and general manager of ON Semiconductor’s Advanced Power Division . “Highly reliable power devices enable Kempower and its customers to achieve reliable and durable electric vehicle chargers.”
