On January 19, NXP Semiconductors announced the launch of a new 28nm RFCMOS radar single-chip series for the next generation of ADAS and autonomous driving systems. The newly launched SAF85xx single-chip series integrates NXP's high-performance radar sensing functions and processing technology, providing Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs with greater flexibility, supporting short-range, medium-range and long-range radar applications, and meeting more challenging NCAP safety requirements.
NXP's new automotive radar SoC family includes high-performance radar transceivers and integrates a multi-core radar processor built on the NXP S32R radar computing platform. Compared with NXP's previous generation, the SAF85xx doubles the RF performance and increases signal processing speed by 40%. The single-chip family provides 4D sensing capabilities for corner radar and forward radar, suitable for many safety-critical ADAS applications such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, cross-traffic warning and automatic parking. Thanks to the greater flexibility provided by the new family, OEMs can meet the ever-expanding NCAP safety requirements and the surge in the number of radar sensors, with some analysts predicting that at least five radar sensors will be installed on each car in the future.
IT Home learned that NXP's new radar single-chip series can provide reliable support for long-range detection of objects, and can also distinguish small objects next to large objects, such as cars and motorcycles driving fast around trucks on busy multi-lane highways. The single-chip series is compact, and the specifications of the radar sensor modules built by customers can be reduced by up to 30%.
Below is an introduction to NXP’s third-generation RFCMOS radar platform:
-
-
Based on RFCMOS technology, NXP has achieved large-scale mass production of automotive radars and has shipped tens of millions of units;
-
-
Highly integrated 77 GHz radar smart transceiver SoC with four high-performance transmitters, four receivers, a multi-core radar processor with hardware accelerators, and Gigabit Ethernet communication interfaces and memory;
-
-
It complies with the requirements of automotive functional safety level ASIL B, the ISO 26262 functional safety standard and the ISO/SAE 21434 automotive cybersecurity standard, and can meet the automotive industry's requirements for functional safety and information security.
NXP is ready to sample the SAF85xx radar family to lead customers and is targeting next-generation OEM platforms that leverage NXP’s complete radar sensor solution for 360-degree safety surround detection of vehicles.
The scalable sensing solution is suitable for a wide range of applications from corner radar to high-resolution 4D imaging radar. The S32R platform provides a common architecture to enable software reuse and accelerate development, while also providing a high-performance hardware security engine that supports OTA updates and complies with the latest cybersecurity standards.
