Qualcomm and Red Hat collaborate to redefine the automotive industry with Linux-powered Snapdragon Digital Chassis
— Parties Commit to Accelerating Development and Deployment of Software-Defined Vehicles —
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 23, 2022 – Qualcomm Technologies Inc. today announced a collaboration with Red Hat, a leading provider of open source solutions, to bring an ASIL-B-capable Linux-based operating system to next-generation vehicles powered by the Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™. The Snapdragon Digital Chassis is a complete open, scalable cloud-connected platform for in-vehicle connectivity, digital cockpits, and advanced driver assistance. Using Red Hat In-Vehicle Operating Systems and the Snapdragon Digital Chassis, automakers can help the industry advance the development of software-defined vehicles and help accelerate the deployment of new cloud-connected digital services, creating new opportunities for deeper customer experiences and service-based business models that support vehicle functionality upgrades through the cloud throughout its lifecycle. In addition, automakers will have the opportunity to help customers redefine the driving experience through more seamless connectivity and greater intelligence required for safer, smarter, and more immersive experiences.
As the next generation of cars from global automakers move toward software-defined designs, integrating industry-certified Linux-based operating systems with highly advanced, high-computing automotive solutions such as the Snapdragon Digital Chassis becomes increasingly important to address higher levels of cybersecurity requirements, privacy-related certifications, and software updates for safety applications. With the Snapdragon Digital Chassis powered by Red Hat Automotive OS, automakers will have expanded capabilities to make vehicle updates simpler and more efficient while maintaining functional safety.
“The rise of open source, software-defined design and development approaches to automotive services and innovation is driven by advanced automotive platforms and the flexible Linux-based operating systems that power them,” said Francis Chow, vice president and general manager of Red Hat’s Automotive OS and Edge business. “These advances will help support the latest in-vehicle cloud-native hybrid mission-critical applications while also driving sustainable development and faster development cycles. We are pleased to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies to support the latest Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions with Red Hat Automotive OS and look forward to working together to usher in a new era of software-defined cars.”
“Software-defined cars bring exciting new opportunities to the entire automotive ecosystem, enabling car capabilities beyond what people could have imagined,” said Bill Pinnell, vice president of product management, automotive business, Qualcomm Technologies. “Working closely with the open source community will accelerate our goal of providing users with feature upgrades, on-demand experiences, and new technologies and services. We are excited to be working with Red Hat and look forward to working together to accelerate the next generation of automotive innovation.”
Initial releases of Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms and Snapdragon Ride™ Platforms pre-integrated with Red Hat Automotive OS are expected to be available to automotive ecosystem partners for evaluation starting in the second half of 2023.
