At present, electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular, but some consumers are still hesitant to buy electric vehicles. One of the reasons is that the charging time of electric vehicles is too long. At present, the charging time of electric vehicles is measured in hours. If the charging process is accelerated, it may affect the battery life. In addition, due to the recent high temperature weather, the State Grid has piloted the implementation of peak-shift charging for electric vehicles in some high-temperature and high-load provinces. Charging under high-temperature power restrictions has become a new problem. Recently, Zhichepai learned that researchers reported at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society that they have designed an ultra-fast charging method that can power different types of electric vehicle batteries in 10 minutes or less without causing harm.

It is understood that researchers say fast charging is the key to improving consumer confidence and full acceptance of electric vehicles, which will make vehicle charging very similar to refueling at a gas station. When the battery is charged, lithium ions migrate from one side of the device to the other. As long as the lithium ions migrate quickly, the charging will be faster, but sometimes the lithium ions do not move completely to the other side. In this case, lithium metal will accumulate and may cause problems such as early battery failure. The solution to this problem is to improve the charging protocol in a way that optimizes speed while avoiding damage to the battery, but developing the best protocol requires a lot of data. To meet this challenge, the research team at the Idaho National Laboratory used machine learning technology to integrate charging data to create a unique charging protocol.

The results show that the new method significantly increases the energy entering the battery in a short period of time, and the battery can be charged to more than 90% in 10 minutes without problems of lithium plating or cathode cracking. The researchers plan to use the model to develop better methods and help design new lithium-ion batteries that are "optimized for fast charging." The researchers also said that the ultimate goal is to allow electric vehicles to "tell" charging stations how to quickly and safely power their specific batteries.
