Toyota Motor Corp. surpassed General Motors Co. as the largest U.S. automaker by sales for the first time, a shift driven in large part by a global chip shortage that has hit the auto industry disproportionately.

Toyota has been working to expand its business in the United States for decades, with sales exceeding General Motors by about 114,000 vehicles in all of 2021. IT Home learned that Toyota said on Tuesday that it sold 2.3 million vehicles in the United States in 2021, an increase of about 10% from 2020.

By contrast, General Motors, for decades the largest U.S. automaker by sales, said its 2021 vehicle sales fell nearly 13% to 2.2 million vehicles as the chip shortage took a bigger toll on its manufacturing operations, leaving dealers with fewer cars to sell.
