"Lithium-ion batteries are essential in everyday life," said Zoitos. "With higher energy density, SiFAB will enable faster charging and longer battery life for applications in electric vehicles , portable electronics, power tools, energy grid storage and aerospace. Recent testing of SiFAB has shown that this technology could provide an alternative solution as early as 2020, enabling better and longer-lasting applications."
The data, collected in part by U.S. energy technology company Wildcat Discovery Technologies and the Battery Innovation Center, supports SiFAB's performance in various electrode formulations with higher capacity and fast charging capabilities.
Through advanced testing in 2021, SiFAB has demonstrated: a reversible capacity greater than 1,000 mAh/g, and a 20% improvement in gravimetric energy density over graphite; strong performance in a variety of electrode formulations, providing design flexibility for battery manufacturers and OEMs; proven high-rate charge and discharge performance up to 4C and high-temperature performance of 45°C; stable cycling with high silicon loading and minimal volume expansion; SiFAB enters existing manufacturing processes; SiFAB has been successfully used in roll-to-roll processes in standard manufacturing scenarios.
Chad Cannan, Senior Vice President of R&D at Unifrax, said: "After working with well-known battery labs and partners to test SiFAB, we are excited to share the SiFAB test results at The Battery Show. The data shows that SiFAB performs well in real battery conditions and actual applications. With the good performance of SiFAB and Unifrax's expanded production scale, our first SiFAB production line is currently being built at our Indiana manufacturing facility and is expected to produce tens of tons in early 2022, and hundreds of tons in 2023, making SiFAB accessible to more customers."
