Quanergy Systems , Inc., a leading provider of Optical Phased Array (OPA)-based solid-state LiDAR sensors and intelligent 3D solutions for the automotive and IoT sectors, announced the successful completion of a driving demonstration of its S3 Series LiDAR , a true solid-state LiDAR sensor that uses industry-first OPA technology and scalable CMOS silicon manufacturing processes to enable cost-effective production for the mass market.
The demonstration was conducted in partnership with Zero Electric Vehicle Inc. ( ZEV ), an innovative sustainable energy company that provides fleet electrification and electric vehicle platforms to companies looking to leverage their existing assets as they transition to electric transportation.
In this test, a solid-state LiDAR test platform with a single scanning beam was mounted on a car, with additional cameras installed to facilitate visual observation. The test vehicle followed the target vehicle closely, driving at different distances in bright sunlight - from close range to 100 meters, and always maintaining safety. During the test, the target with a reflectivity of 10% was selected to simulate an extremely difficult object to detect.
“Quanergy’s CMOS-based OPA technology has made significant advances in long-range automotive applications,” said Jim Maury, President of ZEV. “We believe Quanergy’s OPA technology provides a highly reliable and cost-effective 3D LiDAR solution that is critical to the automotive industry.”
Quanergy's S3 series lidar sensors are designed to meet the most stringent automotive object detection and collision avoidance requirements. The sensor's unique electronic beam steering system has no moving parts and is shock and vibration resistant. The S3 series offers a mean time between failures (MTBF) of more than 100,000 hours and is targeted for mass market production at a price of $500.
“We are extremely excited about this industry-first demonstration of Quanergy’s OPA-based solid-state technology achieving a range of 100 meters in full sunlight,” said Dr. Tianyue Yu, Quanergy Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer. “Our team is now working to achieve more aggressive performance goals, including longer distances, increased vertical field of view, and data rates. Stay tuned for more news!”
In addition to advancing the application of OPA technology in the automotive field, Quanergy is also rapidly expanding its influence and introducing smart lidar solutions into numerous IoT applications. In addition to building a strategic partnership with Sensata ,
Quanergy's recent commercial IoT deployments also include:
Selected by PARIFEX as exclusive supplier of long-range 3D LiDAR for speed detection and enforcement on French highways
South Korea's first vehicle-to-everything (V2X) smart city deployment
Used by Puxiang Bioenergy Co., Ltd. to optimize recycling processes and reduce environmental impact in China

In June of this year, Quanergy entered into a definitive merger agreement with CITIC Capital Acquisition Corporation (NYSE: CCAC) ("CCAC"). Upon completion of the transaction, the combined company will be renamed Quanergy Systems, Inc. and is expected to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol "QNGY". The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021, subject to customary closing conditions.
