The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has spun off its 3D battery business from its Holst Centre under the name LionVolt BV. According to foreign media reports, LionVolt BV promises to provide a 3D solid-state thin-film battery that is lighter, safer and more efficient than current lithium batteries.

This innovative technology is not entirely new, but builds on concepts previously developed by Philips Research.

The new battery is based on 3D technology and solid-state material layers, using thin functional materials to cover billions of pillars to make batteries. Current conduction is achieved by combining 3D structures, thin films and solid electrolytes. The 3D structure formed can provide a large surface area, while the distance between the two electrodes is short, and lithium ions only need to move a short distance, thereby reducing the number of charge and discharge times and speeding up the charge and discharge rate.

In addition, using film provides greater flexibility and is lighter in weight, making the material particularly suitable for vehicles such as sedans.

Finally, “solid-state” materials are safer than “wet” batteries that use liquid electrolytes, as they do not leak and therefore do not pose a risk of explosion or fire.

LionVolt said the new production technology will be used to produce batteries, but it still needs to be scaled up. They are waiting for investors to build the first pilot plant. In the long run, larger 3D solid-state batteries will be developed for automotive and other markets.
