As a leading company in automotive semiconductors, Freescale and Khronos Group have jointly launched an automotive multimedia embedded microprocessor i.MX35 with an integrated OpenVG hardware accelerator, becoming the world's first automotive multimedia microprocessor with an integrated OpenVG hardware accelerator. The excellent multimedia performance of i.MX35 has pushed in-vehicle multimedia to a new level, confirming Freescale's unshakable leading position in the automotive electronics industry.

Low-cost and full-function has become the current development trend of in-vehicle multimedia. Cars have become an indispensable "entertainment space on wheels" for modern consumers, with more and more requirements for multimedia functions. The demand for all-round integration of automotive information, entertainment, control, etc. has become increasingly prominent. High integration and low cost will be the focus of competition among suppliers of in-vehicle multimedia solutions. And the proportion of this market in the automotive electronics field is expanding year by year.

The Freescale i.MX35 (AEC-Q100 Grade 3 automotive certified) is based on the ARM1136JF-S core, has a main frequency of up to 532MHz, has an enhanced multi-level cache system, and integrates a vector graphics hardware accelerator (OpenVG), an independent image processing unit (IPU), a vector floating-point coprocessor (VFP), and a RISC -based DMA controller.

OpenVG is a 2D vector graphics acceleration standard proposed by the Khronos Group. It can provide smooth and delicate 2D/2.5D graphics effects, obtain better human-machine interface (HMI) display and flexible text font display effects. i.MX35 hardware acceleration of OpenVG achieves smooth interactive performance at extremely low processor power levels. A more direct application is the natural acceleration of Adobe Flash, allowing engineers to design user interfaces directly in Flash without manual C language programming. The OpenVG hardware acceleration module also greatly improves the display performance of GPS navigation systems: smooth map route display effects (excellent anti-aliasing capabilities) and font display that can be enlarged and reduced according to perspective.

The integration of the vector floating-point coprocessor (FPU) can easily realize voice control, achieve safe driving, and greatly enhance the ability of GPS navigation equipment to analyze and calculate routes.

The MediaLB (Media Local Bus) media local bus, which is specially designed for automotive application integration, strengthens the support for MOST network. Once connected to the MOST INIC, it can access the MOST (Media Oriented System Transport ) multimedia directional system transmission network, and can easily control car audio devices, car TVs, global positioning systems, car phones and other infotainment devices, thus truly realizing an economical, efficient, rich and powerful car infotainment system.

Another feature of i.MX35 is the comprehensive support for audio system: it can not only control audio equipment through MediaLB external MOST network, but also realize multi-channel (5.1 channel) audio output or multi-speaker output through chip-defined ES AI ( Enhanced Serial Audio Interface) . It supports S/PDIF digital audio interface . On this basis, it can realize flexible playback of multiple audio formats.

At the same time, i.MX35 has excellent connectivity: supports 2 CAN bus interfaces, 2 USB (OTG/Host), integrated USB PHy layer on chip, MMC/SD/ SDI O port, FEC Ethernet interface and 3 UART interfaces.

i.MX35 has a wide range of choices in terms of memory: support for DDR2 and MLC NAND Flash reduces system costs to a minimum, and also adds support for Nor Flash with strong stability and fast reading speed, so that customers can obtain higher flexibility in product design. The automotive software platform AUTO 4.0 released by Microsoft earlier is a reference design that uses the Freescale i.MX35 processor. Its system block diagram:

i.MX35 MDK adopts a flexible core board plus motherboard design architecture, fully considering the domestic mainstream manufacturing process. The CPU core board and motherboard are designed with 6-layer and 4-layer PCB boards respectively, which minimizes the design difficulty and process cost. On the basis of fully supporting all interfaces of i.MX35, some necessary interfaces are added, such as expanding the 3 UART interfaces defined by MX35 to add 2 on the development board to meet the requirements of multi-functional design of vehicle-mounted products. In addition, the MDK development board also provides GPS module interface, Wi-Fi&BlueTooth module interface and CMMB module interface, etc., which can realize DVD playback, rear view, GPS navigation, DTV digital TV, Wi-Fi&BT wireless transmission, FM radio, MP3/MP4/MP5 audio and video playback, voice control, car intelligent control and almost all car multimedia function applications, maximizing the flexibility of customers in product design.
