Nidec ASI Co., Ltd., part of the Motion & Energy Business Unit of Nidec Corporation, has signed two installation agreements for battery energy storage systems (BESS) with French renewable energy developer Neoen. The total value of the two agreements is approximately EUR 70 million.

The battery energy storage system under the agreement will be designed and assembled in Roches-la-Molière, Loire, France, and will be put into operation near the village of Julikala in Lappeenranta, Finland and Vesterålen County, Sweden in the first half of 2025. The capacity of the battery energy storage system is 93.9 MWh and 112.9 MWh respectively.

In recent years, BESS has also attracted much attention in Nordic countries as a technology to achieve a stable supply of renewable energy. Nidec ASI has a BESS market share of more than 50% in the Nordic region, especially Sweden, which has become Nidec ASI's fourth largest market. In the past three years, Nidec ASI has signed seven cooperation agreements with Neoen, Germany's Uniper and Sweden's OX2.

Xavier Barbaro, CEO of Neoen, said: “Batteries play an important role in the energy transition by enabling a stable supply of renewable energy, as they can increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix used for power generation. We are convinced that accelerating the deployment of these large batteries will enable a rapid and challenging energy transition.”

Franck Girard, President of Nidec ASI SAS, said: “With this new project, Nidec ASI has become a partner in the energy transition in important markets such as Northern Europe. The company will continue to invest in expanding its production capacity to meet the growing market demand.
