The 500MW/1000MWh Riddell battery project is the largest battery project in Australia to date.

Fluence Energy announced last week that it has surpassed 20GWh of energy storage systems deployed and contracted globally.

In a press release, the company called it an industry-leading milestone that marks the beginning of a new era for battery-based energy storage.

“As battery energy storage projects continue to grow in size and complexity, few technology providers can offer the breadth of solutions and experience required to succeed in this rapidly evolving market,” said Julian Nebreda, president and CEO.

As we enter a new era of battery energy storage scale, Fluence is well positioned to serve customers around the world. We will continue to bring new products and features to market while providing services, support and digital solutions to help customers create the most value from their operations.

The global battery energy storage market is growing rapidly, with BloombergNEF predicting that by 2030, annual new capacity will reach 158GWh.

Fluence said it has worked with customers to deploy some of the world’s largest and most complex energy storage systems, with its global assets having accumulated nearly 3 million operating hours to date.

One of the recent highlights was AGL Energy’s selection of the company to deliver a 500MW/1000MWh energy storage system for the Liddell Battery Project in New South Wales. Located at AGL’s Hunter Energy Centre in New South Wales, the project is Fluence’s largest energy storage system in Australia to date. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024, with operations expected to begin in mid-2026.

Fluence has also deployed three energy storage-as-transmission asset projects for transmission system operators in Germany, including a 250MW grid booster for TransnetBW and two grid booster systems for TenneT TSO totaling 200MW.
