On December 27, the Guangdong Yangjiang offshore wind power energy storage technology demonstration project, Xia'an Energy Storage Station, invested and constructed by Guangdong Power Grid Energy Investment Co., Ltd., was officially connected to the grid and put into operation. As the first offshore wind + independent energy storage supporting project in the southern region and the largest in the country, this project is an important practice for the China Southern Power Grid Company and the Three Gorges Group to actively carry out in-depth cooperation in the field of new energy storage and fully implement the new energy security strategy of "four revolutions and one cooperation". It has been included in the annual key demonstration projects of Guangdong Power Grid and will play an important demonstration and leading role in the development of the industry in the future.

"Distribution and storage" helps build an important new energy center in western Guangdong

The Xia'an Energy Storage Station is equipped with 6 sets of 5MW/5MWh/10kV energy storage systems in this phase, with a total installed capacity of 30MW/30MWh, which can store electricity equivalent to the power generation of a 30,000-kilowatt power plant in one hour. As a supporting electrochemical energy storage power station project for the first phase of the 300MW project of the Three Gorges New Energy Yangxi Shaba Offshore Wind Farm, the smooth commissioning of the Xia'an Energy Storage Station is of great significance.

Compared with conventional power sources, offshore wind power has a more obvious anti-peaking characteristic, and has significant deficiencies in power balance, safety and stability control, etc. The grid-connected Xia'an Energy Storage Station can effectively smooth out short-term peak output, and can also play an important role in increasing the consumption of new energy, reducing power generation plan deviations, improving the safe operation and stability of the power grid, and alleviating transmission congestion. It can largely solve the randomness and volatility of new energy power generation, and make offshore wind power resources more widely and more effectively utilized.

As the Yangxi Shapa offshore wind farm is further developed and utilized on a large scale, the Xia'an energy storage station will also undergo a second phase of expansion to fully meet the demand for offshore wind power grid connection, enrich Yangjiang City's complete energy system of "wind, solar, water, fire, gas, and nuclear storage", and provide assistance for Yangjiang City's green and low-carbon transformation and the realization of high-quality development.

Demonstration and guidance to promote the development of Guangdong's energy storage industry

At present, the development of new energy storage industry generally faces the problems of high cost, low utilization rate and single business model. Xia'an Energy Storage Station chooses outdoor container layout solution and adopts the most advanced high-voltage cascade technology, which significantly reduces the internal loss of batteries and greatly improves the efficiency of power conversion. At the same time, it breaks through the bottleneck problem of mixing different new and old batteries in the industry, avoids the waste of replacing the whole cluster of batteries, and greatly reduces the cost of later operation and maintenance.

In addition, during the investment and construction process, Xia'an Energy Storage Station implemented an investment model of "co-construction and sharing", actively explored the operation strategy of "multi-purpose in one, time-sharing reuse", broadened the cost diversion channels from the source, and effectively improved the project's profit level. It has important value in enriching new energy storage business models, driving the application of large-scale energy storage in the grid connection of offshore wind power projects, and continuously promoting the development of Guangdong Province's energy storage industry.

At present, the energy investment company has developed and holds 4 thermal energy storage joint adjustment projects with a scale of 59MW/34.5MWh; 34 user-side energy storage projects with a scale of 55MW/110MWh. In the next step, the company will take Xia'an Energy Storage Station as a new starting point and important foothold, give full play to its rich experience in energy storage project development, construction, operation and maintenance management, help Guangdong build a new power system demonstration zone, and make greater contributions to promoting the construction of a new power system and a new energy system.
