In its push into the UAE market, India’s leading battery recycling company Lohum Cleantech Pvt Ltd (Lohum) has signed an agreement with the UAE Ministry of Energy’s Department of Infrastructure and BEEAH, a provider of sustainable development and smart solutions in the Middle East, to set up the first electric vehicle battery recycling plant in the UAE.
As part of the joint development agreement, Lohum will build an 80,000 square foot facility to refurbish and recycle lithium batteries, which will recycle 3,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries per year and reuse 15MWh of battery capacity per year for sustainable energy storage systems (ESS).
Lohum’s latest move is closely aligned with the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Strategy initiative, circular economy policies and its efforts to promote electric vehicles in the country.
"We will provide the support needed for the success of this plant as part of our global electric vehicle market plan to increase the share of electric vehicles to 50% of all vehicles on our roads by 2050," said Sharif Al Olama, undersecretary for energy and petroleum.
This will support our national economy and reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector – a target sector of our decarbonisation campaign and national energy and water demand side management programmes.
Lohum’s recycling facility is expected to save 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year in the UAE.
